According to reports, OpenAI is prioritizing more resources into the continuous improvement of its flagship product, ChatGPT, which has led to several senior researchers leaving the company recently. Both current and former employees have stated that the company is reducing investment in some long-term, exploratory research projects to compete with pressure from competitors such as Google and Anthropic. In the past few months, senior employees who have left OpenAI include Vice President of Research Jerry Tworek, Head of Model Policy Research Andrea Vallone, and economist Tom Cunningham. Insiders say that these departures are closely related to changes in the company's resource allocation direction. Several interviewees have stated that OpenAI currently views large language models as an engineering problem and is continuously improving model performance by expanding computing power, algorithms, and data scale. This approach has brought significant progress, but has also made it difficult to advance projects that lean towards "blue sky research."
