Chile's former president Bachelet will run for United Nations Secretary-General.
On February 2, local time, Chile, Brazil, and Mexico governments officially submitted the application for Michelle Bachelet's candidacy to the United Nations, formally announcing Chile's former President Bachelet's candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. In November last year, the United Nations initiated the selection and appointment process for the next Secretary-General. The current Secretary-General, Guterres, began his term in January 2017 and was re-elected in June 2021, with his term ending on December 31 of this year. According to the United Nations Charter, the selection of the Secretary-General must first be recommended by the Security Council and then appointed by the General Assembly, with a term of 5 years.
