The presidential and legislative assembly elections in Costa Rica began voting at 6 a.m. local time on February 1. Preliminary vote counting results are expected to be announced late on the 1st. According to the Supreme Electoral Court of Costa Rica, this election has about 3.73 million registered voters, who will elect the president, vice president, and 57 members of the new legislature. Voting is expected to end at 6 p.m. local time on the 1st. A total of 20 candidates are running in this presidential election, with Laura Fernndez, the candidate of the Sovereign People's Party, leading in multiple polls. According to pre-election polls released by the University of Costa Rica's Center for Political Studies, Fernndez's support rate exceeds 40% and she leads significantly. According to the Costa Rican Constitution and Electoral Code, a candidate who receives more than 40% of the vote in the first round of voting will directly win the presidential election. If no candidate reaches this threshold, the top two candidates with the most votes will move on to a second round of voting.
