Insider: Nvidia's $10 billion deal with OpenAI put on hold.
Insiders revealed that Nvidia had originally planned to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to assist in training and running the latest artificial intelligence models. However, due to some internal skepticism from certain individuals within the chip giant, the related plans have stalled. In September last year, the two companies announced this major partnership and signed a memorandum of understanding: Nvidia would provide at least 10 gigawatts of computing power for OpenAI, and the chip manufacturer also agreed to invest up to $100 billion to support the construction of OpenAI's computing capabilities. As part of the agreement, OpenAI also promised to lease chips from Nvidia. Insiders said that at the time, the company that developed ChatGPT had anticipated that the negotiation would be completed within weeks, but to this day, the negotiation is still in the preliminary stage with no substantive progress. Some informants indicate that both parties are currently reevaluating the future direction of this cooperation, with recent discussion topics including Nvidia making equity investments of hundreds of billions of dollars in OpenAI's current fundraising round. Insiders revealed that in recent months, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang had privately emphasized to industry partners that the initial $100 billion agreement was non-binding and not yet finalized. Some reports also claim that Huang privately criticized OpenAI's lack of business operations discipline and expressed concerns about its competition with companies like Google and Anthropic. An OpenAI spokesperson stated, "Both teams are actively working on finalizing the details of the cooperation. Nvidia's technology has been the cornerstone of our technological breakthroughs, supporting our current operations, and its technology will continue to play a central role in our future business scalability." A Nvidia spokesperson also said that Nvidia has been OpenAI's preferred partner for the past decade, and the company looks forward to continuing to collaborate with OpenAI.
