According to informed sources, SoftBank is reportedly in talks to add up to $30 billion in funding to OpenAI. This move will further expand the substantial stake that this Japanese conglomerate already holds in the startup company. Media reports previously stated that OpenAI, as the developer of ChatGPT, is seeking to raise up to $100 billion in new funding from investors. If this fundraising is completed as planned, the company's valuation could reach as high as $83 billion. Negotiations for the related transactions are still ongoing, and the terms are subject to change. SoftBank is already one of the largest shareholders in OpenAI, with its ownership stake increasing to 11% last December through a $22.5 billion investment. SoftBank's chairman, Masayoshi Son, previously stated in a statement that the company's vision aligns closely with OpenAI. In order to raise the necessary investment funds for OpenAI, SoftBank has stated that it has sold its stake in chip manufacturer NVIDIA for $5.8 billion. OpenAI requires significant funding to continue developing its artificial intelligence models, meet its huge computing power needs, and retain top research talent in an increasingly competitive market.
