Trump hinted that the candidate for the chairman of the Federal Reserve may have been finalized, suggesting that if Powell remains as a board member, he may not have a good time.
In the latest round of attacks against Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, President Trump hinted that if Powell continues to serve on the board of the Federal Reserve after his term as chairman ends, he will not be able to enjoy his term. "We will see how things develop," Trump said in an interview with CNBC aired Wednesday at the Davos summit in Switzerland. However, when asked if Powell could continue to serve as a member of the Federal Reserve board until 2028 after his term as chairman ends, Trump, who is looking for the next chairman, warned, "If that is the case, I don't think his life will be very, very happy." Trump's search for a new Federal Reserve chairman has been ongoing for months and seems to be nearing its end. In what was seen as a "four-way competition" by outsiders, Trump said on Wednesday that the candidate pool has significantly narrowed. He said, "I want to say that the candidates for Federal Reserve chairman have been reduced to three, no, two. And perhaps I can tell you, in my mind, there may only be one left." In the selection process led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent, the final candidates are believed to be Rick Rieder of BlackRock, Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, Christopher Waller, Federal Reserve Board Governor, and former Federal Reserve Board Governor Kevin Warsh.
