On the evening of January 21st local time, Sabah Nu'man, the spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, issued a statement stating that, in light of the changes in the security situation in Syria, Iraq has decided to accept some members of the extremist organization "Islamic State" who were previously detained in prisons controlled by the "Syrian Democratic Forces" in Syria. The statement pointed out that the Iraqi National Security Council recently held an emergency meeting and, in cooperation with the international coalition led by the United States to combat the extremist organization "Islamic State," approved the Iraqi side to accept Iraqi and other nationalities of detained individuals and transfer them to relevant correctional facilities belonging to the Iraqi government. The statement stated that the Iraqi side has completed the reception of the first batch of individuals, totaling 150 members of extremist organizations, including Iraqis and foreigners, who had directly participated in violent criminal activities against Iraqi civilians. The statement also stated that the number of individuals to be received in subsequent batches will be determined based on security and on-site assessments to prevent the spread of security risks from high-ranking members of extremist organizations.
