The German Deputy Prime Minister said that Europe will respond clearly to the US tariff threat.
German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said on the 19th that Europe will provide a united and clear response to the US tariff threats against eight European countries. Klingbeil met with French Minister of Economy and Finance Roland Lescurier in Berlin that day. During a joint press conference held after the meeting, Klingbeil said that Germany is preparing countermeasures with European partners against the US tariff threats. These measures include freezing the EU-US tariff agreement that was originally planned to be submitted to the European Parliament for a vote this week, reinstating EU tariffs on the US that were temporarily suspended, and considering the use of European legal tools to address economic coercion in a tough manner. Klingbeil also said that Europe continues to face new provocations and has reached its limit. US President Trump announced on social media on the 17th that starting from February 1st, a 10% tariff will be imposed on goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland, with the tariff rate increasing to 25% on June 1st until an agreement is reached on the "comprehensive, full purchase of Greenland" by the US.
