Micron Technology stated that the shortage of memory chips has been escalating in the past quarter, and reiterated that the tight supply situation will continue into next year, as the demand for high-end semiconductors for artificial intelligence infrastructure construction has surged. "The degree of shortage we currently see is truly unprecedented," said Manish Bhatia, the executive vice president of operations at Micron, in an interview last Friday after a groundbreaking ceremony at a production facility in the state of New York. Bhatia pointed out that the high-bandwidth memory required for manufacturing AI accelerators is "consuming so much of the available capacity in the industry that traditional areas such as smartphones and personal computers are facing severe shortages".
