Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel said on the 18th that the United States' imposition of tariffs on European countries in order to obtain Greenland is an "unjust" and "extortionate" act, leaving open the possibility of the EU taking countermeasures. Van Weel said in an interview on a Dutch public broadcasting program on the 18th that he was "very dissatisfied" with US President Trump's decision, and that allies should not deal with each other in a pressuring manner. He said that using tariffs for matters unrelated to trade is unjust. Van Weel also stated that the Netherlands will work within the framework of the EU to push for the US to revoke its decision to impose tariffs on February 1st. If unsuccessful, the EU does not rule out taking countermeasures.
