The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal by Bayer AG, aiming at addressing thousands of lawsuits alleging that its popular product, the herbicide Roundup, causes cancer. The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear Bayer's challenge to a $125 million jury verdict in Missouri, citing that some claims in the case are preempted by federal law in 2023. Bayer executives hope the ruling by the justices will help resolve thousands of Roundup lawsuits, many of which allege failure to warn. Since acquiring Monsanto for $66 billion and inheriting a series of legal challenges that have clouded its stock price, Roundup lawsuits have been a persistent problem for the German conglomerate. The company has already paid over $10 billion in verdicts and settlements related to the herbicide and its active ingredient, glyphosate. Despite investors' optimism about the company's turnaround, Bayer's stock price rose by about 80% last year but is still lower than before the acquisition of Monsanto. The German company has been struggling to address the current and anticipated future volume of Roundup lawsuits. Bayer has publicly stated that it has resolved over 130,000 cases through settlements or dismissals by judges. It has also set aside an additional $6 billion to address Roundup-related cases.
