On December 26th, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment held its routine press conference for December. Zhao Shixin, director of the Soil Ecology Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, introduced that the Ministry is vigorously promoting the treatment of black and smelly water bodies. The treatment rate of more than 5042 large rural black and smelly water bodies nationwide has reached over 98%, achieving basic elimination. Firstly, the approach is gradual and systematic, with controlled lists. It is clearly stated that by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the basic elimination of large rural black and smelly water bodies will be achieved, and by 2027, comprehensive elimination will be reached. The 5042 large areas of black and smelly water bodies have been included in the national list, with over 11,000 other water bodies included in the provincial list. Secondly, the approach involves systematic treatment and ecological restoration. The revised "Guidelines for the Treatment of Rural Black and Smelly Water Bodies" clarifies a system of control, pollution interception, internal treatment, water system connection, and ecological restoration. Thirdly, it involves full verification and social supervision. Through methods such as undercover inspections, remote sensing monitoring, and water quality monitoring, local areas are verifying and certifying the treatment of water bodies one by one. Over the past five years, more than 23,000 verifications have been conducted, achieving full coverage.
