To continue selling aircraft, Boeing has applied to the FAA for emission exemptions.
On December 19, local time, it was learned that Boeing has applied to the Federal Aviation Administration for an exemption from the International Civil Aviation Organization's 2017 fuel efficiency and emission standards, to allow for the continued sale of up to 35 777F and 777-200LRF freighters after the relevant rules take effect in 2028. According to current regulations, Boeing 777F and 777-200LRF models that do not meet the new emission standards will cease production by the end of 2027. Boeing stated that the main reason for the exemption request is due to the continued delay in certification and delivery of the new generation 777-8F freighter. Although the 777-8F is expected to comply with emission requirements, its target entry-into-service date is 2029, with some customers suggesting a possible delay until 2030, resulting in a supply gap in the large long-haul freighter market around 2028.
