Recently, the appearance of the Ming Dynasty painting "Jiangnan Spring" from the collection of the Nanjing Museum in the auction market has attracted attention. Through interviews, reporters obtained relevant historical materials on the allocation, adjustment, de-accession, and sale of the "Jiangnan Spring" painting. In June 1986, the Ministry of Culture formulated and implemented the "Management Measures for Museum Collections". Subsequently, in accordance with these measures, the Nanjing Museum, with the assistance of the former Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Appraisal Group and Nanjing Museum appraisers, re-examined a batch of proposed removals of calligraphy and painting works, confirming that they were not suitable for collection. On April 15, 1997, the Nanjing Museum submitted a report to the former Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture regarding the handling of cultural relics that did not meet collection standards, requesting "to adjust the cultural relics that do not meet collection standards and allocate them to the provincial cultural relics store for processing". The former Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture agreed to the adjustment on April 21, 1997. On May 8, 1997, the painting "Jiangnan Spring", which was identified as a counterfeit by experts, was transferred to the former Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Store and was sold for 6,800 yuan on April 16, 2001, with the sales invoice explicitly stating it as "Imitation of Qiu Ying's Landscape Scroll". Industry insiders have emphasized that a major focus of this incident is whether the art market should pay attention to the legitimacy of the source of the auction items. The Nanjing Museum must provide clear evidence to prove that the painting was legally and properly taken out of the collection, otherwise, the painting should not only be circulated in the market but also be retrieved in accordance with the law. The latest information reveals that this incident has attracted the attention of relevant authorities, who will establish an investigatory team to conduct further investigations.
