After the rapid appreciation of the Thai baht this month, the Bank of Thailand has ordered strict inspections on foreign exchange transactions involving the sale of US dollars, especially those related to gold trading, in order to curb the inflow of funds. "We will strengthen our scrutiny of transactions involving the sale of US dollars to prevent unwelcome or non-commercial capital inflows into the country," Governor Vitai Ratanakorn said in a statement on Tuesday. "Commercial banks will be required to closely monitor foreign exchange inflows." As the Thai baht hit a four-year high on Monday, the Bank of Thailand issued a statement for the second consecutive day in response to the baht's rise, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The strengthening baht will impact the country's exports and tourism industry.
