On December 13, 2025, the National Medical Security Work Conference was held in Beijing. The conference emphasized the need to consolidate the achievements of universal insurance coverage in 2026 and improve the basic medical security system. This includes strengthening the coverage of basic medical insurance, improving the funding mechanism for basic medical insurance for urban and rural residents, continuing to improve the management of medical services for difficult populations, enhancing ongoing comprehensive assistance measures for medical security, and establishing a long-term mechanism to prevent and alleviate poverty caused by illness. Additionally, the conference called for a steady promotion of provincial level coordination of basic medical insurance and the enhancement of fund management capabilities.
