The German Federal Parliament passed a new conscription law aimed at increasing the number of soldiers in the military.
On the morning of December 5, local time, the German Federal Parliament passed the "Draft Law on Modernizing the Conscription System" with 323 votes in favor, 272 votes against, and 1 abstention. The bill will now be sent to the German Federal Council for review. If approved, it will be signed by the German President and officially published in the Federal Law Gazette, and will come into effect on the specified date in the law. The goal of the newly passed "Draft Law on Modernizing the Conscription System" is to establish a legal framework for a "new, attractive conscription system" with the ultimate aim of increasing the number of soldiers in the German army. The German Ministry of Defense has previously stated that they plan to increase the number of active duty troops to 260,000 through the new conscription law, an increase of about 80,000 from the current number, while also expanding the reserve forces to 200,000.
