A man has been arrested by the Hong Kong police for inciting hatred and maliciously insulting the victims of the Tai Po disaster.
According to reports from local media in Hong Kong, the National Security Department of the Hong Kong Police Force arrested a 26-year-old man today on suspicion of "inciting acts with seditious intent". The arrested individual is a social media creator. It is reported that the arrested man is suspected of posting videos on social media after the fire at Homantin Hill Road, inciting hate speech. His remarks included calling the victims of the fire "guilty", saying that being burned in a fire is "retribution", and stating that there is no need to sympathize with the victims of the fire. It is understood that the arrested man has been involved in illegal activities in the past, including last year during Typhoon Hitting Hong Kong, when he was arrested by the police for allegedly stealing a cat that was kept as a pet. It is reported that if convicted of "inciting acts with seditious intent", the maximum sentence is 7 years in prison.
