Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM.US) Q3 refining profits hit a record high, increases stake in Mozambique LNG project
Exxon Mobil (XOM.US) released its third-quarter 2026 results before the market opened on October 30.
Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM.US) third-quarter profit exceeded market expectations, with record refining earnings as the main driver. As Middle East conflicts and Ukraine's attacks on Russia's fuel infrastructure disrupted global energy supplies, rising gasoline and diesel prices significantly boosted refining margins, also highlighting the company's earlier investment advantages in U.S. Gulf Coast refining capacity.
Exxon Mobil Corporation's earnings report released before market open on October 30 showed third-quarter total revenue and other income of $113.164 billion, up 32.7% year-over-year; net income attributable to shareholders of $15.413 billion, up 104% year-over-year; reported earnings per share of $3.72, up 111% year-over-year; adjusted earnings per share of $4.23. Adjusted earnings per share exceeded the analyst average estimate of $4.13.
Quarterly overall profit reached the fourth-highest level in the company's 156-year history, with the refining business particularly outstanding. The Energy Products segment reported profit of $7.169 billion, up 31% quarter-over-quarter; adjusted profit reached $9.053 billion, up 121% quarter-over-quarter and nearly quadruple year-over-year, setting a record high.
The surge in refining earnings was mainly driven by higher gasoline and diesel prices and tightening global refined product supply. Exxon Mobil Corporation's indicative refining margin rose to $50.3 per barrel in the quarter, far above $29 in the second quarter; crude unit utilization at U.S. Gulf Coast refineries reached 100%. As Middle East conflicts disrupted energy markets and Ukraine attacked Russia's fuel infrastructure, global refining and refined product supply chains came under pressure, giving companies with ample refining capacity greater profit room.
As the operator of the world's largest refining system outside China, Exxon Mobil Corporation is well positioned in this round of refining margin gains. Chief Financial Officer Neil Hansen said the profit increase was less a windfall than a return on the company's increased output when the market needed it most. Since 2019, Exxon Mobil Corporation has increased U.S. Gulf Coast distillate production by about 40%, thanks to sustained investment in refining facilities in recent years, while some competitors chose to sell refining assets or convert them into biofuel plants during the same period.
Hansen noted that the most meaningful way the company can respond to rising global commodity prices is to use existing capacity as much as possible to increase supply. With the global refined products market tight, Exxon Mobil Corporation is supplying more diesel to the market.
Exxon Mobil Corporation Chairman and CEO Darren Woods also said the company continues to improve operating efficiency while increasing output through scale, integration advantages and technical capabilities. Investments including the Beaumont refinery expansion have driven the company's U.S. Gulf Coast distillate production up about 40% compared with 2019. Woods emphasized that since 2019 the company has achieved $16.9 billion in structural cost savings, and these improvements did not come merely from favorable commodity prices and margins, but from sustained investment, technological progress and operational execution.
However, the strong refining performance did not appear across all business segments. Upstream third-quarter profit was $7.088 billion, down 11% quarter-over-quarter, mainly due to Brent crude averaging $97.01 per barrel, down from $104.52 in the second quarter, as well as the impact of accelerated Guyana equity. Chemical profit was $735 million, down 35% quarter-over-quarter; North American polyethylene prices fell from $1,454 per ton to $998 per ton.
In terms of production, Exxon Mobil Corporation's third-quarter upstream production was 4.496 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, down 18,000 barrels quarter-over-quarter; average production for the first nine months was 4.534 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, down 2.5% year-over-year. The company attributed the production changes to affected production in the Middle East and asset divestitures.
Amid tight energy supply, Mozambique LNG project stake increased
In addition to the refining business benefiting from tight refined product supply, Exxon Mobil Corporation is also expanding its long-term natural gas asset portfolio.
Hansen said in an interview that through an asset swap with Italian energy company Eni, the company raised its interest in Mozambique's Rovuma liquefied natural gas (LNG) project from 37.5% to 50% and remains the project operator. In exchange, Eni will receive other assets in the region.
The two sides plan to make a final investment decision on the project before the end of this year. Hansen said the company is advancing the development plan and related approvals with the Mozambican government, and progress is smooth.
The Rovuma LNG project had been stalled for more than four years due to local security threats. As the Iran war disrupts global LNG supply and natural gas prices in Europe and Asia rise to near record highs, the project's strategic value has become more prominent. Although most of the project's expected output has already been contracted for sale, Exxon Mobil Corporation still chose to increase its stake, showing confidence in the project's long-term prospects. If the project ultimately proceeds, it could also become the largest operated capital project in Exxon Mobil Corporation's history.
Solid cash flow, dividend increased for 44 consecutive years
Strong earnings also further improved Exxon Mobil Corporation's cash flow and balance sheet. Third-quarter operating cash flow reached $25.65 billion, free cash flow was $19.11 billion; $9.4 billion was distributed to shareholders, including $4.3 billion in dividends and $5.1 billion in share repurchases.
The company announced it would raise its fourth-quarter dividend to $1.07 per share, marking the 44th consecutive year of annual dividend increases; it also plans to maintain $20 billion in share repurchases in 2027. At the end of the third quarter, the company's net debt fell to $22.1 billion, down about $11 billion from the beginning of the year.
In terms of market performance, since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran at the end of February, international oil prices have risen nearly 60% cumulatively, while Exxon Mobil Corporation shares rose about 20% over the same period and hit a record high this week. As Middle East conflicts continue to disrupt energy supply, the market had previously relied mainly on strategic and commercial inventories to fill the supply gap, but as inventory buffers are gradually depleted, energy price volatility may further intensify.
At the same time, rising fuel prices are also putting pressure on U.S. consumers. High energy costs have become an important issue in U.S. cost-of-living discussions and may influence voter sentiment in some districts in the upcoming midterm elections. For energy giants such as Exxon Mobil Corporation, rising refined product prices have brought substantial profits, but they also create a sharp contrast between corporate earnings performance and the energy cost pressure borne by consumers.
