On Wednesday, NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI.US) opened nearly 6% lower, and as of publication, the decline had narrowed to about 5%. On the news front, NXP Semiconductors NV reported third-quarter results with both revenue and profit setting records, but the company's fourth-quarter revenue guidance was slightly below expectations. NXP Semiconductors NV's third-quarter report showed quarterly revenue of US$3.786 billion, up 19% year over year and above the market consensus; non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were US$4.20, up 35% year over year and also ahead of expectations. Non-GAAP gross margin was 58.6%, and operating margin was 37.1%; quarterly free cash flow was US$1.21 billion, representing 31.9% of revenue. The company expects fourth-quarter revenue of US$3.75 billionUS$3.95 billion, with a midpoint of US$3.85 billion (up about 15% year over year), below analysts' expectation of US$3.87 billion; the midpoint of non-GAAP operating profit was US$1.44 billion, also slightly below expectations.
The commentary from Jefferies Financial Group Inc. was quite representative: the results and guidance were "broadly in line" with expectations. However, compared with the stronger outlooks of other chipmakers, its performance appeared "disappointing." The most direct point of reference is Texas Instruments Incorporated. Last week, this analog chip leader gave a strong revenue forecast, saying it expects broad-based growth in the industrial, automotive, and data center sectors and plans to expand capacity to meet order demand. The two companies' statements on demand visibility diverged, and the market placed its bets on the more optimistic side.
The deeper divergence lies in the pace of recovery in automotive semiconductors. Some analysts noted that a substantive rebound in automotive chip demand may be delayed until 2027 rather than accelerating in the second half of 2026. NXP Semiconductors NV itself provided an outlook for 2027 of double-digit revenue growth and a 60% gross margin, but in the view of some investors, this growth expectation itself already implies a more moderate recovery trajectory than before.
