In the final week of October, the AI storage chain entered a dense earnings season. Two representative companies delivered "profit alerts" almost simultaneously, yet the market gave sharply opposite stock price reactions.
SK Hynix (SKHY.US) delivered a "double beat" on profit and returns, with its stock rising against the trend. According to SK Hynix's latest earnings report, the company's revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2026 (ended September) was KRW104.61 trillion, up 328% year-on-year, surpassing KRW100 trillion in a single quarter for the first time; operating profit was KRW83.33 trillion, up 632% year-on-year, setting a record for the sixth consecutive quarter, with an operating margin of 80%; net profit was KRW39.77 trillion, up 216% year-on-year, also a record high. The company attributed the results to demand for AI storage (HBM) and high-value-added products driving up prices of key products.
On the same day, SK Hynix announced its 2026 shareholder return plan: on top of the completed KRW40 trillion buyback and cancellation, it added a new KRW60 trillion return plan, bringing the full-year shareholder return scale to more than KRW100 trillion, of which cash dividends will exceed KRW30 trillion. The company also disclosed that it has signed long-term agreements (LTAs) with 14 major customers, locking in capacity corresponding to more than 50% of total capacity for 2027-2028, and expects the memory chip supply shortage to persist until 2030; sixth-generation HBM4 will become the main product starting in the fourth quarter.
After the earnings and return plan were announced, as of press time, SK Hynix's stock had risen nearly 8% in the Seoul market, and its US overnight gain had at one point widened to about 7%.
Seagate also reported record profit and guidance that comprehensively beat expectations, but was sold off after hours. According to the fiscal 2027 first-quarter (ended October 2, 2026) earnings report released by Seagate Technology Holdings PLC, the company's revenue was US$4.233 billion, up 61% year-on-year, above the analyst consensus of US$4.15 billion; non-GAAP diluted earnings per share (EPS) was US$7.68 (US$2.61 a year earlier), beating Wall Street expectations of US$7.45, with GAAP diluted EPS of US$7.59; non-GAAP gross margin was 57.8% (GAAP 57.3%), non-GAAP operating margin was 50.7% (GAAP 48.8%); net profit (non-GAAP) was US$1.781 billion. Free cash flow was US$1.479 billion, a record for a single quarter; during the quarter the company repaid about US$1.2 billion of debt principal, reducing total debt to US$2.4 billion at quarter-end, and after the quarter it further repaid US$750 million, bringing total debt down to US$1.6 billion. The company announced a roughly 3% increase in its quarterly cash dividend to US$0.76 per share, and returned US$568 million to shareholders this quarter through dividends and buybacks.
For the next quarter, Seagate guided fiscal 2027 second-quarter revenue of US$4.8 billion (US$100 million) and non-GAAP diluted EPS of US$9.20 (US$0.20), both above analysts' prior expectations of US$4.55 billion and US$8.66.
However, this earnings report, with both results and guidance beating expectations, resulted in an after-hours stock drop of as much as 8%; as of Tuesday's close, its stock had retraced about 35% from its all-time closing high on June 22.
In the same AI storage sector, in the same earnings window, "profit alert, stock rises" and "profit alert, stock falls" coexist, forming a strikingly sharp divergence this earnings season.
The "pricing gap" on earnings durability
The primary reason for the opposite reactions is not a deterioration in Seagate's fundamentals, but differing pricing of "how long the profits can last" for the two.
Seagate's own fundamentals show no signs of deterioration. According to statistics, in the past 30 days analysts have made zero downward revisions to Seagate's earnings expectations, and nearline capacity has already been allocated through 2027, with fiscal 2027 contract prices locked in. In other words, the selloff stems more from "high expectations and crowded positioning after a large year-to-date gain." Analysts noted that "after the stock surged sharply earlier this year, Wall Street has scrutinized Seagate more strictly in recent months; record profitability has now become the market's baseline expectation rather than a buy signal."
By contrast, what SK Hynix gave the market was "rhythm and signals": not only earnings beats, but also shareholder returns on a scale of hundreds of trillions of won and long-term agreements locking in volume. MS Hwang, research director at Counterpoint Research, believes the company's quarterly profit "has not yet peaked, and the upward momentum will last at least through 2027," with this jump mainly driven by sharp price increases in conventional DRAM and NAND, not just HBM. Macquarie estimates that memory accounts for about one-third of all AI data center spending, and HBM prices are expected to more than double in 2027.
It is worth noting that SK Hynix's third-quarter net profit (KRW39.77 trillion) was below some market expectations (about KRW60 trillion), but operating profit and the return plan still drove the stock -- further showing that the market rewards "certainty signals and shareholder-friendly actions," not a comprehensive beat on a single profit line.
Different structural constraints on the supply side
The deeper reason lies in differences in supply-side constraints between the two sub-sectors.
The memory/HBM side is "tight." SK Hynix has signed long-term agreements with 14 customers, locking in capacity equal to more than 50% of total 2027-2028 capacity. KB Securities analyst Jeff Kim noted that more than 70% of Korean chipmakers' planned 2027 output is already covered by five-year supply agreements, with the remaining less than 30% going to other customers such as smartphones and PCs. Samsung and SK Hynix together control about 60% of DRAM revenue and more than 80% of HBM revenue, and the "crowding-out effect" of HBM lines on DRAM wafers keeps standard memory tight even as total capacity expands. Citi analyst Peter Lee sees the memory super-cycle lasting nine years; another Citi view holds that the current cycle "is expected to outperform the 2001-2007 upcycle," and forecasts that total HBM capacity per AI system will rise from 20.7TB to 110.6TB (an increase of 434%).
The hard drive/HDD side is weighed down by "loose" concerns. Seagate's decline was partly triggered by news on the competitive supply side: Toshiba reportedly plans to nearly double its annual HDD capacity for AI data centers by fiscal 2027, raising oversupply concerns; meanwhile Wells Fargo & Company cut Seagate's target price to US$865 from US$1,180, and JPMorgan cut it to US$1,050 from US$1,240. The data storage industry is traditionally cyclical, and any signal of weakening demand or supply expansion easily triggers Wall Street unease.
Of course, Seagate is not without a hedging narrative. CEO Dave Mosley said in the official earnings press release that data creation, retention and reuse continue to compound storage demand, and "visibility into long-term customer demand supports our view of a multi-year growth phase," emphasizing that the HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording) technology roadmap meets exabyte demand through areal density gains while maintaining supply discipline. But compared with memory makers' demand already "locked in" by long-term agreements, HDD demand still depends more on cloud providers' capital expenditure -- a variable now being questioned by the macro picture.
The "double-edged sword" of valuation discounts
On valuation, the entire storage/memory sector currently trades at multiples significantly below the broad market. According to statistics, Micron (MU.US) trades at about 5x forward P/E, SanDisk (SNDK.US) below 6x, Western Digital Corporation (WDC.US) about 12x, and Seagate about 15x, all below the S&P 500 (about 19x) and Nasdaq 100 (about 20x).
Low multiples are both a reason for "overselling" and possibly a contrarian warning of "cycle peak." Some on Wall Street warn that the historical cyclicality of memory demand makes these low multiples a warning signal; but the scale and speed of AI buildout may also render historical cycle comparisons invalid. Based on institutional target prices, Seagate's 12-month implied upside exceeds 70% and SanDisk's exceeds 80%, ranking among the top seven in return potential in the S&P information technology sector.
Lorraine Tan, director of research at Morningstar, offered a cautious scenario: AI-related stocks could fall another 20%-30% before becoming "buyable," with the risk that if hyperscaler capital expenditure peaks, the demand curve behind HBM will flatten regardless of supply discipline. D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria is on the bullish side, giving Micron a US$2,000 target price and calling this a "trinity" super-cycle of GPU, CPU and memory, saying the market is pricing in "the end of the storage cycle" while AI compute demand is still growing.
Asymmetric transmission of tighter AI financing
Zooming out to the macro picture, the backdrop to this divergence is tightening in the AI financing environment, and this macro pressure hits the two companies asymmetrically.
Jefferies analyst Christopher Wood warned investors in a report to "watch credit spreads closely for any evidence that the market is no longer willing to finance the ongoing AI capex boom": Oracle Corporation's (ORCL.US) five-year credit default swap (CDS) spread widened to 288 basis points from 186 basis points on September 11, and CoreWeave's (CRWV.US) rose to 1,118 basis points from 749 basis points, "the highest levels since the AI capex cycle began in early 2023"; the report also said global AI stocks' forward earnings growth is expected to slow from about 100% in 2026 to 30% in 2027 and 22% in 2028, with AI stocks trading at about 23x forward earnings versus about 13x for non-AI stocks.
Meanwhile, NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) CEO Jensen Huang said in an interview that there is "capital scarcity," with "demand for capital far exceeding its availability." According to other reports, Oracle Corporation invoked force majeure at its New Mexico data center, CoreWeave bond yields surged and its stock plunged, Firmus Grid withdrew its IPO plan, and Nscale came under pressure after Microsoft Corporation exited a UK project -- a series of events all pointing to financing and construction pressure on AI infrastructure.
This means the key to the transmission mechanism is "whether demand has been contracted." Roundhill Investments CEO Dave Mazza believes that "if the four major players can prove their order backlogs are contracted rather than expected, the debate over a memory cycle peak will be pushed back a year." This is precisely why SK Hynix, with long-term agreements locking in volume, earns a premium for "earnings visibility," while Seagate's HDD business sits further downstream and in a more cyclical position, and faces Toshiba capacity expansion and rising component costs (Seagate CFO Gianluca Romano acknowledged on the earnings call that some external component costs are far higher than a year ago), leaving it more heavily pressured in the same macro headwind.
It should be emphasized that Jefferies explicitly said in its report that it "does not believe AI project financing has stopped," but views widening credit spreads as "an early warning signal that needs monitoring." In other words, macro pressure is an "amplifier," not a "verdict."
Stringing these threads together reveals a clear transmission chain: tighter macro financing lowers risk appetite and earnings-duration expectations across the AI chain; but within the sector, memory/HBM, with long-term agreements locking in volume, concentrated share (Samsung + SK Hynix control more than 80% of HBM revenue) and structurally tight supply, gains higher earnings visibility, allowing it to still receive positive feedback in the headwind; while Seagate's HDD business is further downstream, more cyclical, faces Toshiba capacity expansion and rising component costs, and its demand is highly dependent on cloud providers' capital expenditure, which is now being questioned by the macro picture. Thus, the same macro headwind, transmitted through "differences in earnings visibility," produces the divergence of "profit alert, stock rises vs. profit alert, stock falls."
That said, this explanatory framework is not definitive. If Seagate subsequently announces long-term agreements of a similar scale locking in volume, or Toshiba's expansion plan is disproven, or hyperscaler capital expenditure is significantly cut, the logic of the divergence would need revision. In addition, the bearish side still carries weight -- "Big Short" Michael Burry has converted his short position in Micron into put options, believing the structural shortage created by the current AI buildout is temporary and the industry will return to boom-and-bust alternation within two years; Sungkyunkwan University professor Kwon Seok-joon also warned that if AI demand falls short of expectations, capacity expansion by large memory makers could push the industry into oversupply by 2028, while Morgan Stanley estimates that by 2028 China will account for about 30% of global net incremental DRAM wafer capacity.
