According to people familiar with the matter, Tesla, Inc. (TSLA.US) CEO Musk has invested approximately $1 billion in U.S. media giant Skydance (SKYD.US). The investment comes as Skydance completes its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and begins integrating its vast film, television, and streaming businesses. Facing a debt burden of nearly $80 billion, the company is actively seeking new equity financing to support business integration and cost-cutting plans. As of the time of reporting, representatives for Musk and Skydance had not immediately responded to media requests for comment. Skydance shares fell about 1% on Thursday. On October 6 this year, Paramount officially completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, with the combined entity adopting Skydance as its company name. The deal brought together two renowned Hollywood film studios, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, as well as two major streaming platforms, Paramount+ and HBO Max. At the same time, the new company also owns a vast television network business, two major news divisions, and a large number of corporate management functions. How to effectively integrate these businesses has become the primary challenge facing management. Skydance co-CEOs David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz are leading this complex integration process. The company has previously said it expects to achieve $6 billion in cost savings over the next three years, mainly through business integration and eliminating duplicate expenses to improve operational efficiency. However, the massive debt load remains a significant financial pressure for the company. Skydance currently carries nearly $80 billion in debt, and while advancing cost cuts, it also needs to ensure that its film production, streaming, and television businesses have sufficient funds to maintain operations and development. Against this backdrop, Musk's approximately $1 billion equity investment will provide Skydance with new capital support and also highlights the long-standing business ties between Musk and the Ellison family. David Ellison's father is Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle Corporation (ORCL.US). The latter has had a years-long investment partnership with Musk. In 2022, when Musk acquired social media platform Twitter (now renamed X) for $44 billion, Larry Ellison contributed $1 billion to support the deal. In addition, Larry Ellison invested in Tesla, Inc. in 2018 and served as a member of its board of directors. Larry Ellison also played an important role in Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. He personally guaranteed more than $40 billion in equity financing for Paramount's acquisition plan, providing funding support for the completion of the transaction. Now, with Musk injecting approximately $1 billion into Skydance, the capital cooperation between the two sides has further extended into the film, television, entertainment, and media industries. For Skydance, this investment helps replenish equity capital at a critical stage of integration, but relative to its debt scale of nearly $80 billion, the $1 billion capital injection remains limited. In the future, the market will focus on whether Skydance can achieve its goal of saving $6 billion in costs over three years as scheduled, and whether the company can gradually ease its heavy debt pressure through further financing, improved cash flow, and business integration.
