NVIDIA Corporation's capacity expansion plan at GTC Berlin is providing new fundamental support for advanced packaging stocks that had previously been under pressure. Amkor announced a new $1.3 billion South Korea capacity expansion agreement with NVIDIA Corporation, bringing the total value of their multi-year agreements in Arizona and South Korea to $3 billion. Related prepayments will support capacity construction and align with the demand of NVIDIA Corporation's next-generation AI platforms.
US-headquartered advanced semiconductor packaging company Amkor Technology (AMKR.US) announced a significant agreement worth up to $1.3 billion with "AI chip superpower" NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) to expand its 2.5D/3D advanced packaging capacity in South Korea, after which the company's shares rose about 10% in pre-market trading on Wednesday. Amkor said in its latest press release: "Together with this latest commitment, Amkor Technology and NVIDIA Corporation's multi-year agreements in Arizona, USA and South Korea total approximately $3 billion. These initiatives are designed to support growing advanced packaging demand for next-generation AI and accelerated computing platforms." These large-scale, multi-billion-dollar investments aim to expand advanced chip packaging capacity to meet the growing computing resource demands of large tech giants such as cloud computing companies for high-performance AI chips and accelerated computing systems focused on AI data centers. Advanced packaging, compared with traditional packaging systems, helps integrate semiconductor components into a single package, thereby improving performance and energy efficiency. NVIDIA Corporation expands capacity with long-term advanced packaging agreement, Amkor sees rebound catalyst NVIDIA Corporation's capacity expansion plan at GTC Berlin is providing new fundamental support for previously pressured advanced packaging stocks. Amkor announced a new $1.3 billion South Korea capacity expansion agreement with NVIDIA Corporation, bringing the total multi-year agreements between the two parties in Arizona and South Korea to $3 billion. Related prepayments will support capacity construction and align with NVIDIA Corporation's next-generation AI platform requirements. This latest news therefore drove its pre-market gain of about 10% on October 21; previously, as of the 20th, Amkor closed at $41.70, down 20.4% for October, significantly weaker than the roughly 10.6% decline in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index over the same period. The market has thus gained a concrete basis for reassessing its growth prospects: customers' long-term capacity commitments are providing demand support for U.S.-based advanced packaging investment. NVIDIA Corporation's advanced packaging partnership with the company has extended across the complete chip manufacturing and packaging/testing chain. Amkor signed a 10-year agreement in June this year with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR, NVIDIA Corporation's largest chip foundry partner, establishing a framework for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR to procure advanced packaging and testing services from it; the two parties previously made clear that they would jointly determine the technologies to be adopted in Arizona, including Integrated Fan-Out (InFO) and CoWoS. The core division of labor is to connect Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR's advanced wafer manufacturing with Amkor's packaging and testing, enabling shared customers to obtain one-stop manufacturing services in the United States. Because customer commitments exceeded the first-phase planned capacity, Amkor announced a second phase of the campus in September, raising the total planned project investment to $12 billion, with the second phase expected to be completed by the end of 2029. The more complex the AI agent task execution, the more prominent the value of advanced packaging Amkor's main business is outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT), covering markets such as mobile phones, computing, automotive, and data centers; its capabilities most relevant to AI include 2.5D/3D through-silicon vias (TSV), high-density fan-out (HDFO), flip chip, and heterogeneous integration. 2.5D packaging connects compute dies with high-bandwidth memory (HBM) through an interposer, while 3D integration further uses vertical interconnects to shorten data transmission paths; its S-SWIFT high-density fan-out platform connects multiple dies through fine redistribution layers (RDL). The wafer thinning, interconnect processing, assembly, and testing undertaken by Amkor are directly related to whether chips can be mass-produced and delivered under target bandwidth, power consumption, and reliability requirements. Agents such as Astra and Muse combine multi-turn reasoning, tool calling, and multimodal processing into continuously executed tasks; as the number, complexity, and concurrency of tasks increase, computing and memory access demands expand accordingly. It follows that large cloud computing providers' active expansion of AI accelerator deployments will also continuously increase demand for high-density interconnects between compute dies and HBM, driving more complex packaging and testing investment. Amkor's growth space comes from both the expansion of AI chip shipments and the increase in per-chip packaging complexity; NVIDIA Corporation's multi-year agreement and the cooperation framework with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR provide customer and manufacturing system support for it to capture these incremental opportunities, and subsequent capacity utilization and yield ramp-up will determine the strength of converting revenue into profit.
