The three major U.S. banks' net interest income hit a record for the fifth consecutive quarter: customers keep borrowing, and rising interest rates are "feeding" the banks.

JPMorgan (JPM.US), Citigroup (C.US), and Wells Fargo & Company (WFC.US) reported on Tuesday a combined net interest income (NII) of $56.5 billion for the third quarter, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of record highs. JPMorgan further projected that its net interest income will rise even higher in 2027.
From "Expected Rate Cuts" to "Spread Is King": A 180-Degree Narrative Turn
This outlook stands in sharp contrast to the market sentiment at the beginning of the year. At that time, the banking industry broadly expected rates to decline, and market attention was focused on the explosive growth of trading businessesthe standout performance of investment banking trading desks had once captured the vast majority of investors' attention, while the more traditional profit model of earning interest by extending loans and holding other interest-earning assets was overshadowed and pushed out of the spotlight.
Now the wind has shifted. With rates staying elevated or even rising and customer borrowing demand remaining resilient, net interest income has once again become the most important component of the big banks' profit engine.
Banks also observed that consumers and businesses remain fully capable of servicing their debt. The number of so-called "non-accrual loans" (loans on which banks stop recognizing interest income) disclosed by all three banks declined in the quarter, indicating that credit asset quality is still improving rather than deteriorating.
Bank of America Corp will report third-quarter results on Wednesday, when the market will get further confirmation of this trend.
Why Higher Rates Actually "Feed" the Banks
Mechanically, this round of record net interest income is not hard to understand. The Federal Reserve's relatively tight rate environment has allowed banks' asset side (loans, credit cards, investment portfolios) to reprice faster thanand abovetheir liability side (deposit costs), expanding net interest margins accordingly. At the same time, corporate capital expenditure appetite and consumer credit demand have not cooled noticeably due to higher rates, and the combination of rising volume and rising prices has pushed interest income higher.
More noteworthy is JPMorgan's forward guidance. The bank explicitly projected that net interest income will be higher in 2027, implying that management believes the neutral rate is unlikely to fall significantly in the near term and that its balance sheet structure is sufficient to sustain spread income. For the market, this is effectively a disguised "rate guidance"revealing the big banks' true assessment of the macroeconomic environment more directly than any economic forecast.
Lingering Concerns: GEO Group Inc Politics and Cautious "Locking Everything Down"
Behind the impressive numbers, however, the banks remain highly vigilant. GEO Group Inc political uncertainty aboundsthe ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, stubborn inflation, and high oil pricesall weigh persistently on management's minds.
JPMorgan Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Barnum said on Tuesday: "We're just making sure we're scrubbing every corner thoroughly. Capital is being drained through all sorts of different mechanisms, and we have to be very, very on top of it to make sure nothing slips through our fingers."
Analysts noted that these remarks carry a dual meaning: on the one hand, the banks do not believe systemic risk is imminentotherwise they would not have issued higher earnings guidance; on the other hand, the erosion of corporate and household balance sheets from GEO Group Inc conflicts and energy prices is gradual, and banks are setting aside buffers for potential tail risks through provision reviews and credit "scrubbing." In other words, the combination of "record income + cautious provisions" is precisely the standard posture of the current Bank of America Corp industry in response to a "high-rate, high-uncertainty" environment.
