Bumble (BMBL.US) stock price surged about 50%! Ithaca wants to swallow this dating and social networking platform for $1 billion, betting on AI to crack the growth dilemma?
According to people familiar with the matter, dating app provider Bumble Inc. is in talks to sell itself to emerging investment firm Ithaca Holdings for about $1 billion.
Bumble Inc. (BMBL.US), a well-known U.S. dating app provider, is shifting from waiting for user growth to recover toward the possibility of a comprehensive transformation under a wave of capital takeover and AI applications. On October 12, Eastern Time, Bumble's stock price in the U.S. market, driven by news of negotiations for an approximately $1 billion privatization deal, ultimately closed up about 50% at $3.80 on Monday, with its market value breaking through the $500 million threshold in one move. Potential major buyer Ithaca Holdings hopes to use advanced AI technology to transform its portfolio companies, giving the deal the dual meaning of an acquisition of a mature internet asset and an investment in AI applications. However, the two sides have not yet reached a final agreement, and the specific per-share acquisition consideration has not been disclosed.
Public information shows that dating app provider Bumble operates online dating and social networking services, while Ithaca operates technology company investment and operations. Bumble's Bumble and Badoo mainly provide dating matching, monetized through subscriptions and paid features, while BFF covers friend-finding, groups, and community connections. Ithaca was founded by Sequoia Capital partner Ravi Gupta and former Meta executive John Hegeman, and its website positions the company as a holding platform for long-term ownership of leading technology companies, with the goal of using AI agents and other cutting-edge global technologies to improve users' product experience.
Some operating data previously released by Bumble explains why the acquisition opportunity suddenly appeared in the second quarter of 2026, revenue fell 15.2% year over year to $210.5 million, paying users decreased 16.4% to about 3.2 million, and average revenue per paying user rose only 1.2%, showing that user churn outweighed monetization improvement; however, the company still achieved $72.9 million in adjusted EBITDA and $51.1 million in free cash flow. Its business growth trajectory has been setback, but the app brand influence, paying users, and cash generation capability still exist, which is precisely the foundation on which a potential buyer can begin restructuring.
Bumble nears $1 billion sale to Ithaca
On October 12, Eastern Time, media cited people familiar with the matter in reporting that dating app provider Bumble Inc. is in talks to sell itself to emerging investment firm Ithaca Holdings for about $1 billion.
One of the people said the deal could be announced as early as this week. The person requested anonymity because the details have not been made public. The person added that no final decision has been made, the talks could fall through, and the timing of the transaction could change. Representatives for Ithaca and Bumble did not immediately respond to media requests for comment.
Bumble was founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd, former co-founder of Tinder. As dating apps are no longer as popular as they once were, Bumble's valuation has continued to decline in recent years. The company was valued at about $14 billion when it went public in 2021, and its market value as of Monday was about $582 million.
According to equity data compiled by institutions, one of Bumble's early investors private equity supergiant Blackstone Inc. still holds shares in the company.
In March this year, media reported that Ithaca is an investment company co-founded by a Sequoia Capital partner and a former Meta Platforms executive, seeking to raise at least $1 billion.
Is AI gradually taking over the "human love business"? Ithaca seeks to acquire a key gateway to online dating users and rebuild growth and cash flow
Some analysts said the potential deal may be closely related to the global wave of AI applications led by OpenAI and Anthropic in recent years. After the acquisition news was disclosed, some analysts pointed out that Ithaca plans to apply advanced technologies including AI to its investment targets, and Bumble may become one of the company's earliest major deployments.
Reasoning from the acquisition logic, taking over Bumble would allow Ithaca to directly obtain a mature brand, user network, payment system, and operating team, providing a ready-made commercial scenario for technological transformation; the privatization process would also help accelerate product restructuring based on the most cutting-edge AI technologies over a longer cycle.
The technical value is first reflected in reducing ineffective matches and improving the efficiency of genuine connections. Bumble already uses AI to identify fake and scam accounts and is improving its matching algorithm and offline meeting experience. Further room for transformation includes understanding users' relationship needs, optimizing recommendations, and reducing safety review and customer service costs. If these capabilities can increase effective interactions, paid conversion, and word-of-mouth customer acquisition, they could drive revenue and cash flow recovery; however, Ithaca's potential post-acquisition transformation and implementation plans have not yet been announced.
Dating app provider Bumble is in talks to sell itself to emerging investment firm Ithaca Holdings for about $1 billion, highlighting that value discovery in the AI application era can also occur among listed companies that have stalled in growth but possess mature user gateways.
The recent global popularity of AI agents represented by Muse and Astra can be said to provide the technological foundation for the large-scale commercialization expansion of AI, the world's most cutting-edge technology: a single user instruction can trigger a continuous workflow of planning, retrieval, browser operation, code execution, and result verification. Meta previously disclosed exclusively that Muse runs on a dedicated secure virtual machine and can execute tasks across applications around user goals; OpenAI focuses Astra's capabilities on computer operation and complex, multi-step professional work. Reasoning from system architecture, such tasks usually require alternating model inference and tool execution: GPUs and dedicated AI accelerators handle neural network computation, while CPUs handle virtual machines, browsers, code execution, data processing, and task orchestration.
However, just as the Trump administration is actively embracing AI, this most cutting-edge artificial intelligence large-model/AI-agent technology is once again coming under strict scrutiny multiple industry leaders have warned that allowing models to continue developing without more safety guarantees could pose a real threat to the survival and continuation of human society. Trump is dismissive of these calls and insists that he will not slow AI development amid the race between the United States and China for dominance in this rapidly developing field.
Whether Bumble can become a successful case of value discovery in the AI application era depends on whether AI-driven comprehensive transformation can improve user experience and unit-user economics. For Ithaca, this acquisition could become an important project validating the model of "acquire a mature platform technological transformation restore cash returns"; for Bumble shareholders, the current rise is mainly driven by M&A expectations, and a market re-rating at the operating level still urgently needs improvement in paying user and revenue trends for support.
