On September 29, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange released China's international investment position as of the end of June 2026. At the end of June 2026, China's external financial assets reached US$12,180.4 billion, external liabilities stood at US$8,355.5 billion, and net external assets totaled US$3,824.9 billion. Among external financial assets, direct investment assets were US$3,584.9 billion, portfolio investment assets were US$2,157.2 billion, financial derivative instrument assets were US$51.5 billion, other investment assets were US$2,600.5 billion, and reserve assets were US$3,786.3 billion, accounting for 29%, 18%, 0.4%, 21%, and 31% of external financial assets, respectively. Among external liabilities, direct investment liabilities were US$4,170.0 billion, portfolio investment liabilities were US$2,623.2 billion, financial derivative instrument liabilities were US$21.8 billion, and other investment liabilities were US$1,540.4 billion, accounting for 50%, 31%, 0.3%, and 18% of external liabilities, respectively.
In SDR terms, at the end of June 2026, China's external financial assets stood at SDR 8,981.9 billion, external liabilities at SDR 6,161.4 billion, and net external assets at SDR 2,820.5 billion.
