Tirofiban hydrochloride is a reversible antagonist of fibrinogen binding to the platelet surface GPIIb/IIIa receptor. Intravenous administration can inhibit platelet aggregation and is used in adult patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) to reduce the risk of early ischemic events such as myocardial infarction; it can also be used in patients with ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to reduce the occurrence of major cardiovascular events.
