The biotechnology company Electra Therapeutics Inc. (ETRA.US) has officially submitted its initial public offering (IPO) application, aiming to capitalize on the strong performance of biotech IPOs this year to raise funds for its clinical-stage pipeline of immunotherapies for diseases and cancer. The San Francisco-based company disclosed in a filing submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday that its lead candidate is a monoclonal antibody designed for patients with secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH). This condition is a severe high-inflammatory syndrome for which there are currently no widely approved treatment options, resulting in a very low survival rate for patients. The filing also indicated that the company is conducting a Phase 2/3 clinical trial of the drug in newly diagnosed patients. The therapy has received "Breakthrough Therapy" designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which can expedite its development and review processes. According to the disclosed documents, Electra completed a Series C financing round in October last year, led by the investment arm of French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi (SNY.US), OrbiMed Advisors, and Redmile Group, raising approximately $182.7 million. As of June 30 of this year, the company had about $97.7 million in cash and cash equivalents. Compilation data shows that the total amount raised by U.S. biotech and pharmaceutical companies through IPOs this year has reached $6.8 billion, with an average weighted return rate of nearly 70%. Notably, hair loss treatment developer Veradermics Inc. (MANE.US) has seen its stock price soar 476% since going public in February, leading the sector. Analysts Sam Fazeli and Cindy Wu stated: "Biotech IPOs are a barometer for measuring the health of the industry. The average fundraising amount for U.S. biotech IPOs is projected to reach $329 million in 2026, the highest level since 2018, far exceeding recent standout years, indicating a robust market by year-end, with the total number of listings expected to reach 30." The lead underwriters for Electra's IPO include Jefferies Financial Group Inc., Toronto-Dominion Bank, Evercore Inc., and Cantor Fitzgerald. The company expects its shares to trade on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the ticker symbol "ETRA."
