The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released an overview of the telecommunications industry's economic performance for the first seven months before 2026. During this period, the overall operation of the telecommunications industry has remained stable. The total revenue from telecommunications services has shown steady growth, the construction of new infrastructure has progressed in an orderly manner, the user base for 5G, gigabit, and the Internet of Things has continued to expand, and the mobile Internet access traffic has grown rapidly. 2. Telecommunications User Development Situation
Fixed broadband access users are continuously transitioning to gigabit speeds. By the end of July, the total number of fixed Internet broadband access users among the three major telecommunications companies reached 702 million, a net increase of 11.46 million compared to the end of last year. Among them, fixed Internet broadband access users with speeds of 100 Mbps and above reached 671 million, accounting for 95.6% of the total user base; users with speeds of 1000 Mbps and above reached 260 million, a net increase of 21.98 million compared to the end of last year, accounting for 37.1% of the total user base, an increase of 2.6 percentage points over the end of last year.
5G mobile phone users account for over 70%. By the end of July, the total number of mobile phone users among the three major telecommunications companies and China Broadcasting Network reached 1.847 billion, a net increase of 20.62 million compared to the end of last year. Among them, 5G mobile phone users reached 1.303 billion, a net increase of 98.75 million compared to the end of last year, accounting for 70.5% of mobile phone users.
Mobile Internet of Things (IoT) terminal users have grown rapidly. By the end of July, the three major telecommunications companies had developed 2.993 billion mobile IoT terminal users, a net increase of 105 million compared to the end of last year. The number of Internet TV (IPTV, OTT) users reached 409 million, a net increase of 683,000 compared to the end of last year.
3. Telecommunications Business Usage Situation
Mobile Internet traffic has grown rapidly, with the Daily Average Usage per User (DOU) maintaining a high level in July. In the first seven months, the cumulative mobile Internet traffic reached 2.587 trillion GB, a year-on-year increase of 17.6%. By the end of July, the number of mobile Internet users reached 1.638 billion, a net increase of 28.58 million compared to the end of last year. In July, the average mobile Internet traffic per user (DOU) reached 23.81 GB/usermonth, a year-on-year increase of 13.9%, which is 0.77 GB/usermonth higher than the end of last year.
Traditional mobile services continue to shrink. In the first seven months, the duration of outgoing mobile phone calls reached 1.1 trillion minutes, a year-on-year decrease of 6.5%; the duration of outgoing fixed phone calls reached 32.76 billion minutes, a year-on-year decrease of 18.6%. In the first seven months, national mobile SMS traffic decreased by 8.7% year-on-year; mobile SMS revenue decreased by 12.2% year-on-year.
4. Communication Capability Situation
The construction of gigabit fiber broadband networks is progressing in an orderly manner. By the end of July, the total number of Internet broadband access ports in the country reached 1.27 billion, a net increase of 21.52 million compared to the end of last year. Among them, the number of fiber access (FTTH/O) ports reached 1.23 billion, a net increase of 19.35 million compared to the end of last year, accounting for 96.7% of Internet broadband access ports. By the end of July, the number of 10G PON ports capable of providing gigabit network services reached 33.04 million, a net increase of 1.417 million compared to the end of last year.
5G network construction is steadily advancing. By the end of July, the total number of 5G base stations reached 5.154 million, a net increase of 316,000 compared to the end of last year, accounting for 39.4% of the total number of mobile base stations, an increase of 0.3 percentage points over the first half of the year.
5. Regional Development Situation
The penetration rate of 5G and gigabit users continues to increase across various regions. By the end of July, the penetration rates among East, Central, West, and Northeast regions for fixed broadband access users of 1000 Mbps and above were 36.4%, 37.8%, 38.5%, and 32.4%, respectively, increasing by 1.8, 3.9, 2.4, and 3.4 percentage points compared to the end of last year; the penetration rates for 5G mobile phone users were 70%, 71.4%, 70.5%, and 71.2%, respectively, increasing by 4.5, 4.9, 4.6, and 4.7 percentage points compared to the end of last year.
The growth rates of mobile Internet access traffic remain in double digits across various regions. In the first seven months, the mobile Internet access traffic in the East, Central, West, and Northeast regions reached 109.9 billion GB, 59.98 billion GB, 73.35 billion GB, and 15.42 billion GB, respectively, with year-on-year growth of 19.3%, 15.7%, 16.4%, and 18.4%.
