The U.S. Treasury has not purchased any government bonds under the expanded bond buyback program.
BEIJING, August 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated at a press conference on the 24th that the U.S. Treasury will maintain the quarterly Treasury refinancing plan announced earlier this month. She mentioned that the Treasury Department has not purchased any Treasury securities under the expanded buyback program. On the 19th, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a statement stating its plan to increase the buyback scale of 10- to 30-year Treasury bonds by at least double, aimed at providing more liquidity support for the long-term Treasury bond market. The buyback scale will increase from the current $2 billion to $4 billion, with the plan expected to take effect on September 9. Recently, the yields on U.S. long-term Treasury bonds have continued to rise, leading to increased financing costs for the federal government. The yield on 30-year Treasury bonds reached 5.31% on August 17, the highest level since June 2007. On the 19th, the total U.S. federal government debt surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, with interest expenses for the current fiscal year projected to approach $1.2 trillion. The growing debt burden, coupled with high interest rates, is increasing debt service costs, placing significant pressure on the U.S. Treasury. This article is reproduced from "Xinhuanet Co., Ltd."
