SpaceX (SPCX.US) has moved up the launch date of its first batch of Starmind AI satellites to the end of 2027, partnering with NVIDIA Corporation to accelerate the development of orbital data centers.

Elon Musk is pushing the AI race from Earth to space. On Monday, SpaceX (SPCX.US) CEO Musk announced on the X platform that the company's first batch of Starmind AI satellites equipped with NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US) chips will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2027, reaching "significant scale" by 2028. This timeline is earlier than the previous announcement in the prospectus, which indicated a 2028 launch.
On the same day, NVIDIA Corporation officially announced that SpaceX AI will deploy its next-generation Vera CPU to accelerate agentic AI workloads and will send an optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-level system into orbit as the computational core of the first generation of Starmind satellites. This collaboration marks a critical turning point from concept to engineering implementation for the worlds first space AI data center project.
From "ground AI factories" to "orbital data centers": Vera Rubin's space debut
NVIDIA Corporations Vera is the first CPU specifically designed for AI agents, equipped with 88 NVIDIA-designed Olympus cores and LPDDR5X memory with bandwidth up to 1.2TB/s, offering up to 1.8 times the task completion speed compared to x86 CPUs in agentic AI, reinforcement learning, and data processing workloads.
Ian Buck, NVIDIA Corporation's Vice President of Hyperscale and High-Performance Computing, stated: "Agentic AI requires a new type of computing systemnot only to generate answers but also to take action. Vera empowers AI agents with real-time action capabilitiesexecuting code, processing data, and coordinating complex tasks. SpaceX AI is extending this architecture from ground AI factories to the next frontier of orbital computing."
Mike Nicolls, President of SpaceX AI, pointed out: "Vera provides us with the necessary CPU performance and memory bandwidth to handle a large amount of coordination scheduling, code, and data processing tasks, while allowing GPUs to focus on what they do best. This means more powerful AI agents and more valuable work output for every watt of computation."
Starmind: The "space supercomputer" of one million satellites
Starmind is a constellation project for an orbital AI data center planned by SpaceX. In January 2026, SpaceX submitted an application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch up to one million computation satellites, extending AI computational power to the ground via deployments in low Earth orbit.
Each Starmind satellite is essentially an optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-level system, equipped with NVIDIA Corporation Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs. According to previous disclosures from SpaceX, each satellite has a computational power of 120kW (with a peak of 150kW), codename AI1. High-speed data transmission between satellites is achieved through laser links, forming a distributed space AI supercomputer. The first batch of Starmind AI1 satellites will be based on the optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-level system, marking the first time NVIDIA Corporations accelerated computing platform is sent into space.
Musk remarked on X that this data center existing in satellite form is "simpler, cheaper, denser, and lighter than traditional racks." Compared to ground facilities, space deployment does not require a large amount of land, and the heat dissipation pressure is relatively lower.
Computational scale: Radical expansion from 2GW10GW20GW
Musk also revealed more ambitious targets for computational expansion: At an earnings call in early August, Musk disclosed that SpaceX plans to have over 2 gigawatts of AI computational power by the end of 2026, and by the end of 2027, "closer to 10GW rather than 5GW." SpaceX AI will also extend its ground AI infrastructure in Tennessee and Mississippi. The company aims to accumulate computational power through multiple projects, with expectations to reach 20GW by the end of next year.
Musk admitted that some projects might not be fully realized on time, but he anticipates achieving around 15GW of online computational power by the end of 2027. He also revealed that SpaceX expects to obtain a "very large share" of NVIDIA Corporation GPUs by 2027.
Controversy over trillion-dollar capital expenditure and "non-mainstream" path
The cost ledger of the space data center is under close scrutiny by Wall Street. Wood Mackenzie estimates that building a 1GW orbital data center will cost approximately $170 billion, which is more than three times that of traditional ground data centers. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas expects SpaceXs AI-related capital expenditures to reach $53 billion in 2026, with another $130 billion added in 2027.
However, supporters argue that space data centers can avoid regulatory hurdles and community backlash faced by ground data centers. SpaceX is reducing launch costs through the reusability of the Starship rocket, promoting economic improvements in orbital computing. Musk previously explained that after evaluating various chip solutions, the company ultimately determined that the NVIDIA Corporation system was the best choice.
From exclusive cooperation to deep integration: SpaceX goes "All in" on NVIDIA Corporation
This collaboration is a comprehensive upgrade of the relationship between SpaceX and NVIDIA Corporation. On August 4th, during SpaceX's first quarterly earnings call after going public, Musk announced that the company had decided to exclusively use NVIDIA Corporation technology for AI computational power construction. Musk explicitly stated at the time: "We have established a close partnership with NVIDIA Corporation on multiple levels, and we have chosen to exclusively use NVIDIA Corporation."
SpaceX believes that NVIDIA Corporation's Vera Rubin architecture is "the best AI computer available." The two companies announced on August 4th their joint development of the computational payload for the Starmind AI1 satellites, each of which will be equipped with NVIDIA Corporations Vera CPU and Rubin GPU. SpaceX has informed investors that the chips for its space servers will exclusively use NVIDIA Corporation technology.
In a 13F filing disclosed on August 14th, NVIDIA Corporation revealed that it holds approximately $21 billion in shares of SpaceX. This deepening relationship is extending from the capital level to the technology level.
NVIDIA Corporation's earnings report is due Wednesday: The space narrative becomes the latest catalyst
The timing of this announcement coincides with NVIDIA Corporation's quarterly earnings report scheduled for Wednesday (August 26th). The narrative of space AI data centers is adding a new dimension to NVIDIA Corporation's story of AI infrastructure.
NVIDIA Corporation stated that the Vera Rubin platform integrates computing, networking, and software into a unified architecture aimed at reducing the cost per token. As SpaceX AI advances toward gigawatt-level computing capacity, Vera Rubin provides a unified architectural basis for transitioning from ground AI factories to orbital computing.
In the orbital environment, constraints related to power consumption, heat management, bandwidth, reliability, and physical integration are far more stringent than those of traditional data centers. The collaboration between NVIDIA Corporation and SpaceX signifies that its AI accelerated computing system is extending from Earth to low Earth orbit.
