On Friday, Tesla, Inc. (TSLA.US) rose over 5%, closing at $363.15. In news, it was reported that Tesla, Inc. plans to open test ride services for its first autonomous taxi, Cybercab, which has no steering wheel or pedals, to the public at the end of this month. This will formally connect it to the Robotaxi autonomous taxi network in Austin, Texas.
According to informed sources, the deployment will proceed in two steps: first, a test ride experience will be available to internal employees on public roads, and once internal testing is successfully completed after a few days, Cybercab will be integrated into the existing Robotaxi fleet, primarily consisting of Model Y vehicles, and made available to all users. However, the sources also emphasized that the end of August is an internally set target date, and specific arrangements may still change.
Cybercab is a two-seat model specifically designed by Tesla, Inc. for fully autonomous driving scenarios, which first debuted at the "WE, ROBOT" launch event in October 2024. The vehicle completely eliminates the steering wheel and brake pedal, relying entirely on Tesla, Inc.'s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system for operation. The Texas Department of Transportation has confirmed that the design without any control components complies with local regulations. Tesla, Inc. CEO Elon Musk has stated that Cybercab is built from the ground up around the FSD architecture and is expected to become a main product for the company, making up the majority of its production.
In recent weeks, Tesla, Inc. has been intensively preparing for the launch of Cybercab. In June, the first batch of production Cybercabs began engineering testing on public roads in Austin; in July, the company organized employee test rides near its headquarters and collected feedback. Meanwhile, Tesla, Inc. has also completed specialized training for emergency responders throughout Austin, covering emergency handling of Cybercab incidents, which has been confirmed by a spokesperson for the Austin city government. Additionally, the official Robotaxi account of Tesla, Inc. has recently promoted the Cybercab launch event on social media, encouraging users to engage through lotteries and other activities.
On the production and software front, the Texas Gigafactory has been producing Cybercabs since February of this year. Aerial footage from May showed that over 70 vehicles were parked at the plant, a 75% increase since the beginning of the month. In terms of software iterations, Tesla, Inc. revealed to JPMorgan that FSD V15 will bring significant performance improvements, with about 40% of the new technology already tested in the existing Robotaxi fleet and initial feedback being positive. Management views this version as a key entry point for expanding unmanned FSD services.
