Notably, Jeff Bezos sold nearly $350 million worth of Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) shares on Monday, coinciding with the company's stock price reaching an all-time high, marking his first sale of the companys shares this year.
This transaction was disclosed in a Form 4 regulatory filing released after the U.S. stock market closed on Wednesday. A document from two days earlier indicated that the billionaire had expressed an intention to sell up to 15 million shares of Amazon.com, Inc., valued at over $4 billion, and this sale represents only a small portion of that plan.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as the e-commerce retailer's stock price increased by 18% this year, Bezos's wealth grew by $38.7 billion, reaching $292 billion. Following strong revenue reports from its cloud computing business last week, Amazon.com, Inc. recently became the fifth company to exceed a market capitalization of $3 trillion.
Even after this sale, Bezos remains the largest shareholder of Amazon.com, Inc. with an 8.16% ownership stake.
The 62-year-old Bezos has accelerated the pace of selling Amazon.com, Inc. shares in recent years. Since 2020 alone, he has sold more than $38 billion worth of stock; in contrast, from Amazon.com, Inc.'s initial public offering in 1997 until 2020, he had sold less than $10 billion in shares. Within the first nine trading days of 2024, he has already sold over $8.5 billion in stock.
According to regulatory filings, since early 2025, he has also donated over $1 billion worth of Amazon.com, Inc. stock to non-profit organizations.
The billionaire's spending in recent years has become increasingly noticeable, with a significant increase in stock sales occurring during this period. After relocating to Florida at the end of 2023, Bezos spent over $230 million on real estate in the Miami area and invested about $500 million in a 417-foot superyacht.
His aerospace company Blue Origin, founded in 2000 and previously entirely funded by Bezos himself, is now also seeking external financing for the first time, with a valuation of $130 billion.
