Hong Kong's communication network continues to iterate: CMHK will terminate 3G services in October, focusing resources to empower the development of 4G/5G.

The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) in Hong Kong announced today (July 24) that the OFCA has given prior approval to SMARTONE TELECOM Limited (SMARTONE) to terminate the provision of third-generation mobile (3G) services on October 9, 2026. The OFCA has approved the application based on clause 10.4 of SMARTONE's unified carrier license, taking into consideration various factors, including the low proportion of affected customers (including those still using 3G phones/devices and older models of 4G phones/devices that only support older versions of VoLTE technology). SMARTONE has prepared to provide support services to affected customers (such as offering discounts for phone/device replacements) and will make reasonable termination arrangements for customers who choose not to continue using their services by not replacing their phones/devices, providing them with advance notice and customer service support. In addition, the OFCA has required SMARTONE to maintain satisfactory 3G services until the planned service termination date. As the telecommunications operators gradually shut down their 3G mobile networks, the OFCA reminds 3G service users, users of 3G phones/devices, and users of older models of 4G phones to upgrade their service plans and mobile devices as soon as possible. The OFCA also encourages citizens to assist their family and friends, especially elderly users, in upgrading their services to experience the more advanced and diverse functions of the new generation of mobile services. Currently, 4G and 5G technologies dominate the global mobile services, and the world will soon enter the era of 6G technology. Over 99% of mobile service users in Hong Kong are currently enjoying the mobile service experience brought by 4G or 5G technology. Termination of 3G services by the operators in response to customers' continuous demand for more advanced mobile services aligns with international development trends and will allow for the reallocation of freed-up radio frequencies to support the new generation of mobile technologies.
