Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) is further reducing its reliance on OpenAI and plans to replace OpenAI's related technologies with its own artificial intelligence (AI) image generation models in core products such as PowerPoint and Bing. This will continue to lower AI deployment costs and enhance independent research and development capabilities.
Mustafa Suleyman, head of AI business at Microsoft Corporation, stated in an interview that compared to OpenAI models, Microsoft Corporation's self-developed models run faster, cost less, and produce higher quality results, which can also improve user retention rates.
In recent years, Microsoft Corporation has been developing large models that can compete with OpenAI and Anthropic, aiming to gradually integrate AI capabilities into its product ecosystem and reduce AI service costs. Suleyman revealed that, for example, the operating costs of Microsoft Corporation's self-developed Microsoft AI (MAI) model in PowerPoint have been reduced by approximately 85% compared to previous models.
Although Microsoft Corporation can currently use OpenAI's large models for free under a long-term cooperation agreement, the company needs to bear the costs of the large-scale computing infrastructure required to operate these models. Therefore, adopting more efficient self-developed models is expected to bring significant cost savings.
Suleyman stated that in office software like PowerPoint, users often use AI to generate and edit images, such as creating informational charts, and image generation is one of the most commonly used AI functions by new users. Therefore, improving image generation quality and response speed is crucial for enhancing user experience.
In addition to image generation, Microsoft Corporation is also accelerating the deployment of other self-developed AI models. The company announced that enterprises such as T-Mobile US and the UK-based low-cost airline EasyJet have started deploying Microsoft Corporation's latest AI voice generation models in their customer service call centers.
Previous reports have suggested that Microsoft Corporation has gradually replaced OpenAI and Anthropic's text generation models with its own models in various Office software. Microsoft Corporation stated that its MAI model's performance in common tasks in applications like Excel is comparable to OpenAI's latest GPT-5.6 model, but with higher cost efficiency.
Suleyman stated that the MAI model has already been applied in over half of Microsoft Corporation's products and is undergoing testing in all Microsoft Corporation products. He said, "This is a very strong start, and we will continue to push forward with full force."
