According to the data from the Statistics and Census Bureau of Macao, in May 2026, the electronic payment transactions of the food and beverage industry and the retail industry (hereinafter referred to as transaction volume) increased by 1.8% and 14.0% year-on-year, respectively. In the first five months, the transaction volume of these two industries increased by 2.0% and 17.1% year-on-year, respectively.
Changes in transaction volume of the food and beverage industry:
In May 2026, the transaction volume of the food and beverage industry increased by 1.8% year-on-year to MOP 1.19 billion. The transaction volume of fast food restaurants and tea cafes, as well as congee and noodle shops, increased by 5.1% and 4.8% respectively, while the transaction volume of Chinese restaurants decreased by 4.5%. In the first five months, the transaction volume of the food and beverage industry increased by 2.0% year-on-year to MOP 5.86 billion.
Changes in transaction volume of the retail industry:
In May 2026, the transaction volume of the retail industry was MOP 4.9 billion, an increase of 14.0% year-on-year. Compared to the same month last year, the transaction volume of watches and jewelry (+34.2%) and cosmetics and personal care products (+33.1%) showed significant increases, while the transaction volume of department stores (-5.0%) decreased. In the first five months, the transaction volume of the retail industry increased by 17.1% year-on-year to MOP 25.37 billion.
