After the US and Iran signed an agreement, the US military fired for the first time, claiming the airstrikes on Iran were in response to attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian side claimed to have thwarted the US attack and will respond harshly.
The US military stated that Iran's attack on commercial ships apparently violates the ceasefire agreement, and the US military will continue to provide support for the safe navigation of merchant ships to ensure the "comprehensive and effective" implementation of the agreement. Crude oil prices narrowed their decline, with US oil falling by less than 3%. Iranian media reported that there were explosions at the port in the southern Iranian city of Sirik on Friday night. The Iranian military said they will respond quickly and decisively to the US attacks, and any new "foolish actions" will be met with a harsh response.
Leaders of the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to begin the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz just a week ago. However, the ceasefire agreement now faces a severe test as the sky over the strait is filled with smoke.
According to Axios, on Friday, June 26th, after the U.S. stock market closed, the U.S. military conducted multiple strikes in the area of the Strait of Hormuz. Subsequently, according to Xinhua News Agency, the U.S. Central Command posted on social media that the U.S. military launched strikes against Iran on that day in response to an attack on a commercial ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz the day before.
Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that a projectile hit the port area of Sirik in Hormuzgan Province in southern Iran. Iranian media mentioned that hours earlier, the Iranian side had fired warning shots at "non-compliant ships" in the Strait of Hormuz. According to CCTV News, a military source in Iran revealed that explosions were heard at the port in Sirik in southern Iran on the evening of the 26th.
The U.S. has not responded to Iran's claims of warning shots. According to CCTV, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran later stated that they had thwarted a U.S. attack on Sirik Island and that they would respond swiftly and decisively to the U.S. attacks.
Analysis suggests that this is the first time the U.S. publicly admitted to conducting military strikes against Iranian targets following the signing of the memorandum of understanding. While the U.S. emphasized that the purpose of the actions was to enforce agreements and ensure international shipping security, not to escalate conflict, the situation has escalated once again, indicating that the Strait of Hormuz remains the biggest geopolitical variable affecting the global energy market.
After news of the U.S. military attacks on Iran, international crude oil prices that had dropped by at least 4% at the close on Friday narrowed their losses during trading hours. U.S. WTI crude oil fell by more than 3.7% compared to Thursday's close, while Brent crude oil fell by over 4.3%.
The U.S. military stated that Iran's attack on commercial ships clearly violated the ceasefire agreement and they will ensure the agreement is fully enforced.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement via social media officially confirming that the U.S. military had carried out retaliatory strikes against Iran. The statement mentioned that on June 26th, the U.S. conducted airstrikes against Iran in response to the previous day's attack by Iran on commercial vessels.
According to the statement, on Thursday, June 25th, Iran used a one-way attack drone to attack the M/V Ever Lovely, a cargo ship flying the flag of Singapore. At the time of the attack, the cargo ship was leaving the Strait of Hormuz along the coast of the Oman Sea.
The U.S. warplanes then targeted Iran's missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar stations, in response to Iran's attack on the commercial ship. The statement described Iran's aggression against commercial ships as "unwarranted" and a violation of the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran. It also stated that Iran's dangerous behavior disrupted freedom of navigation as trade increasingly passes through the vital international waterway of the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. military stated that they will continue to provide safe passage coordination and support for commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military will maintain deployment and vigilance to ensure that all aspects of the agreement with Iran are fully complied with and enforced.
Earlier, before the U.S. military released its statement, President Trump had warned on social media during the midday trading session on Friday that Iran's attack on commercial ships was a "foolish" violation of the U.S.-Iran agreement.
Analysts believe that while President Trump primarily condemned Iran for foolishly violating the ceasefire agreement politically, the statement from the U.S. Central Command not only officially confirmed the retaliatory action but also detailed the targets and objectives of the strike for the first time. This shows that Washington hopes to maintain the execution of the ceasefire agreement through limited military action, rather than further escalating the situation.
The Iranian military warned that "any new foolish actions" would be met with a strong response.
According to CCTV News, in the early hours of Saturday, June 27th, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran stated that their navy and air force had successfully repelled a U.S. attack on Sirik Island, forcing the aggressors to retreat in defense of Iran's sovereignty over its territory and waters.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps emphasized that the U.S. aggression would not go unanswered, and their response would be swift and decisive at a time and place of their choosing.
Furthermore, they warned that "any new foolish actions will be met with a strong response, completely shattering the aggressors' illusions in the region."
