The nominal value of construction projects completed by major contractors in Hong Kong in the first quarter totaled HK$72.7 billion, an increase of 2.9% year-on-year.

The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today (June 11) the interim results of the Quarterly Survey of Construction Output. The total nominal value of construction work completed by main contractors in the first quarter of 2026 amounted to HK$72.7 billion, an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period last year. After excluding the impact of price changes, the interim results show that in real terms, the total value of construction work completed by main contractors in the same period rose by 1.0%. Analyzing by construction category, the nominal value of private sector construction work completed in the first quarter of 2026 amounted to HK$16.5 billion, a decrease of 15.9% compared to the same period last year. In real terms, the decline was 18.2%. The nominal value of public sector construction work completed in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 17.8% to HK$35.9 billion compared to the same period last year. In real terms, the increase was 14.1%. The nominal value of non-site construction work completed by main contractors in the first quarter of 2026 was HK$20.4 billion, a decrease of 1.3% compared to the same period last year. In real terms, it increased by 1.8%. Non-site construction work includes small-scale new construction projects, building decoration, building renovation and maintenance projects, as well as installation and maintenance of non-site electrical equipment. Analyzing by main use category, the nominal value of residential building construction completed in the first quarter of 2026 amounted to HK$22.5 billion, an increase of 7.6% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the nominal value of transportation engineering construction completed in the first quarter of 2026 decreased by 7.4% to HK$8.1 billion. Comparing on a quarterly basis with seasonally adjusted figures, the nominal value of construction work completed by main contractors in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 6.6% compared to the fourth quarter of 2025. In real terms, the increase was 6.1%.
