Wenyuan Zhixing's robotaxi enters the 12th city globally, joining hands with Uber to launch the first robotaxi service in Spain.
On June 2nd, WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD, HKEX: 0800), a global leader in autonomous driving technology, and international ride-hailing giant Uber (NYSE: UBER) announced their plans to launch Spain's first commercial Robotaxi pilot service in Madrid. This marks the first collaboration between WeRide and Uber in entering the European market, with Madrid becoming the twelfth city globally for WeRide's Robotaxi service. Since its founding in 2017, WeRide has been at the forefront of Robotaxi technology development and commercial exploration, currently covering multiple core markets both domestically and internationally including Guangzhou, Beijing, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Riyadh, and Zurich. By entering Madrid, WeRide aims to further expand its global Robotaxi footprint and accelerate the deployment process on a larger scale. With the support of the Madrid Autonomous Community Government, the commercial Robotaxi service is set to launch officially later this year. Local users will be able to call for WeRide Robotaxi through the Uber App. Initially, the vehicles will be equipped with safety operators who have undergone professional training; in the future, as key operational indicators are progressively achieved, WeRide, AVOMO, and Uber pledge to deploy hundreds of Robotaxis and promote the commercialization of fully autonomous Robotaxi services covering the core areas of Madrid. The landing of the Madrid project follows the successful cooperation between WeRide and Uber in the Middle East market. Currently, the two have launched commercial operations of fully autonomous Robotaxis in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with Riyadh expected to be online with relevant services shortly. This deployment demonstrates WeRide's strategy of light asset operation. By partnering with mature local operators and platform resources, WeRide is able to efficiently drive the commercialization of Robotaxis on a larger scale. In Madrid, the Robotaxi fleet equipped with WeRide's autonomous driving technology will be operated on a daily basis by AVOMO, a subsidiary of Moove Cars Group, which is also Uber's fleet operation partner in Atlanta and Austin in the United States. Madrid is one of the most potential Robotaxi markets in Europe, with strong travel demand, a large urban population base, and a positive and friendly policy environment. Leveraging WeRide's general technology platform, WeRide One, and general simulation platform, WeRide GENESIS, the company is expected to efficiently replicate its operational experience in overseas markets and accelerate the launch of stable and reliable Robotaxi services in Madrid. As early as May 2025, WeRide and Uber announced their plans to deploy Robotaxi services in 15 new international cities within the next five years. With the establishment of the Madrid project, WeRide and Uber have completed layouts in four cities, with the remaining eleven cities set to be covered by 2030. According to the cooperation plan, the two parties will deploy tens of thousands of Robotaxis globally to provide safe and reliable autonomous driving services to more users. Dr. Han Xu, Founder and CEO of WeRide, stated, "Deploying Robotaxi in a fast-developing city like Madrid fully demonstrates WeRide's operational capability in challenging real-world road scenarios. Spain is the fifth European market WeRide has entered, further solidifying our leading position as a trusted Robotaxi operator in Europe. By partnering with Uber, WeRide's autonomous driving technology will be deeply integrated with Uber's global travel platform, accelerating the large-scale commercialization of Robotaxi." Sarfraz Maredia, Global Head of Uber's Autonomous Driving and Delivery business, said, "Madrid is an important step in Uber's cooperation with WeRide and will allow more users to experience autonomous driving services. With a clear regulatory path and a strong local partner base, Madrid is poised to become a leading autonomous driving market in Europe. We are excited to work with all parties to shape the future of autonomous driving in Europe." Manuel Puga, CEO of Moove Cars Group, commented, "The launch of this project is an important milestone in AVOMO's international expansion and further solidifies our position as a global operator of autonomous driving travel. After nearly two years of close cooperation with Uber in the U.S. market, we are now entering the next phase with a long-term vision and a firm commitment to developing efficient and scalable operational capabilities in more new markets."
