The total estimated revenue of Hong Kong's restaurants in the first quarter is 28.4 billion Hong Kong dollars, an increase of 1.1% year-on-year.

On May 6, the Hong Kong government's Census and Statistics Department released the latest provisional figures on restaurant receipts and purchases. The provisional estimate of total restaurant receipts for the first quarter of 2026 was HK $28.4 billion, an increase of 1.1% compared to the same period last year. During the same period, the provisional estimate of total restaurant purchases was HK $9.1 billion, an increase of 3.6% year on year.
After adjusting for price changes, the provisional estimate of total restaurant receipts for the first quarter of 2026 increased slightly by 0.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
Analyzing by restaurant category, in comparison to the first quarter of 2025, the total receipts of Chinese restaurants increased by 0.9% in value but decreased by 0.2% in quantity. The total receipts of non-Chinese restaurants increased by 2.8% in value and 2.1% in quantity. The total receipts of fast food outlets decreased by 0.6% in value and 1.5% in quantity. The total receipts of bars decreased by 4.0% in value and 3.9% in quantity. As for miscellaneous eating places, the total receipts increased by 0.5% in value but decreased by 0.6% in quantity.
Compared to the previous quarter, the provisional estimates of seasonally adjusted total restaurant receipts for the first quarter of 2026 remained at similar levels in both value and quantity.
Analyzing by month, in January, February, and March of 2026 compared to the same months of the previous year, the provisional estimates of total restaurant receipts decreased by 3.2%, increased by 5.7%, and increased by 1.6%, respectively.
After adjusting for price changes, the provisional estimates of total restaurant receipts for January, February, and March of 2026 compared to the same months of the previous year decreased by 4.2%, increased by 4.6%, and increased by 0.8%, respectively.
A government spokesperson noted that the restaurant business continued to improve in the first quarter, with total restaurant receipts increasing by 1.1% year on year.
Looking ahead, the local consumption atmosphere remains robust and the growth of tourism in Hong Kong continues to provide support for the restaurant business. The government will continue to monitor the downside risks posed by geopolitical tensions and assess their potential impact on the restaurant business.
