IBM Corp (IBM.US) is increasing its investment in the quantum and microelectronics hub in Chicago, Illinois, USA and plans to add 750 new jobs over the next five years, further betting on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
According to a joint statement released by IBM and Illinois Governor Pritzker on Wednesday, the new jobs will primarily focus on artificial intelligence, quantum computing, network security, and data science. IBM will also receive $19 million in support through the state government's tax credit program and will establish the "Future Chicago" Center at the tech park.
This expansion is seen as a significant move by IBM to deepen its strategic layout in quantum computing, and further supports Pritzker's goal of attracting high-tech industry investment and employment.
Pritzker stated in the declaration that IBM's investment is a strong vote of confidence in Illinois' growing tech and quantum ecosystem, and the high-quality talent pool in the area.
The Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Hub was launched in July 2024 and groundbreaking took place in September of last year. The project received $1 billion in initial investment support from PsiQuantum, a quantum computing company based in Palo Alto, California. The hub will be built on the site of a former United States Steel Corporation factory in the south side of Chicago.
Analysts point out that this project not only signifies the layout of the quantum computing industry, but also represents the transformation and upgrading of a manufacturing site.
It is worth noting that IBM had already announced at the end of 2024 to establish a National Quantum Computing Algorithm Center at the hub, and collaborate with the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to advance related research. The Illinois government also allocated $25 million in funding for this project.
The market generally believes that as global tech companies accelerate the competition for quantum computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure, IBM's increased investment shows its desire to consolidate its leading position in the competition for the next generation of computing technology.
