According to a Pentagon official, Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOGL.US) has reached an agreement with the US Department of Defense, allowing its artificial intelligence system to be used for classified military work. This agreement was reached against a backdrop of protests from the company's researchers. According to sources, the agreement was signed on Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. A spokesperson for Alphabet Inc. Class C told the media that the company has revised its contract with the Pentagon. While many details of the agreement are still unclear, the spokesperson stated that it includes providing API access to the Pentagon, allowing direct connection to the company's software, but does not involve custom development or model research work. The spokesperson stated in a statement, "We believe that providing API access to commercial models running on Alphabet Inc. Class C infrastructure, following industry standard practices and terms, is a responsible way to support national security." The spokesperson added, "We are committed to adhering to the consensus in both the private and public sectors that artificial intelligence should not be used for large-scale domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons without appropriate human oversight." Both the Pentagon official and sources requested anonymity due to contract issues. This revised contract represents another significant milestone for Alphabet Inc. Class C in providing AI services to the Pentagon. Previously, the company had faced protests from employees over the use of their technology for certain military purposes. The most recent protest occurred on Monday, when hundreds of AI researchers at Alphabet wrote to CEO Sundar Pichai urging him to reject using the company's AI system for classified military workloads. The letter stated, "We are employees of Alphabet Inc. Class C and we are deeply concerned about the negotiations between Alphabet Inc. Class C and the Department of Defense," "As AI practitioners, we are well aware that these systems can lead to power concentration and can indeed make mistakes." In 2018, Alphabet Inc. Class C employees also protested the company's involvement in the "Maven Project." This project was a Pentagon initiative aimed at using AI to analyze images captured by drones, which had become a core part of US military operations. The protests led the company to commit to not developing weapons and other potentially harmful technologies. Alphabet Inc. Class C stated that their work on the Maven project was intended for "non-offensive purposes," but faced with protests and concerns about the potentially lethal consequences of this technology, the company ultimately decided not to renew the Maven contract. Before this deal was reached, the Pentagon had experienced a breakdown in military AI use issues with Anthropic PBC earlier this year. The Pentagon sought to exclude Anthropic and its Claude AI tool from the US defense supply chain and has been seeking new tech giants as AI partners. Previously, Alphabet Inc. Class C had reached an agreement to provide AI systems to the Pentagon for classified work for "any lawful government purpose." After successfully qualifying for a $100 million Pentagon competition (aimed at developing voice-controlled autonomous drone swarm technology), Alphabet Inc. Class C also withdrew from the challenge. According to records, this decision was made after an internal ethics review. The official reason given by Alphabet Inc. Class C was a lack of "resource allocation."
