Locking in national defense military industry and semiconductor key materials! USA Rare Earth (USAR.US) Sounds the horn of "non-China" yttrium production.
USA Rare Earth launches first commercial production of the metal yttrium.
The rare earth new force from the United States, USA Rare Earth (USAR.US), saw its stock price soar by 8% at the close of the US stock market on Wednesday. This came after the company announced that it had completed the first commercial cast of high-purity rare earth metal yttrium at the large factory of Less Common Metals Ltd. in Cheshire, England, making it one of the very few commercial yttrium producers operating outside of the China Rare Earth Resources And Technology giants.
Yttrium is not a common bulk metal, but a key material indispensable in high industrial threshold scenarios such as the semiconductor manufacturing chain, high-temperature engine coatings, aerospace components, electronics, and high-performance industrial applications. Yttrium is crucial in the thermal barrier coatings for turbine blades and other high-temperature aerospace components, as well as in consumer electronic products, energy systems, lasers, superconductor applications, and advanced ceramics, where its chemical stability and high-temperature performance are essential.
USA Rare Earth CEO Barbara Humpton stated in a declaration, "With our yttrium extraction project at Round Top and our rare earth oxide processing capabilities, USA Rare Earth is now equipped to serve large customers in the aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing industries that can no longer rely solely on Chinese suppliers."
Furthermore, at the Semafor World Economy conference this week, the CEO mentioned that the company is "scouring the globe" for potential acquisition targets along the full industry value chain of critical minerals, covering core sectors from initial mining and processing to magnet manufacturing.
Humpton gave an example of the company reaching a deal last week to acquire shares of a significant rare earth processing enterprise, Carester, in France, together with the French investment firm Infravia.
She stated, "We will soon have a rare earth processing line in Europe, which will help to serve European and Asian customers." "We are focused on finding the absolute best assets we can find, whether they are located in the US or outside the US."
The soaring price of yttrium oxide
In terms of industrial form, yttrium is not always used in the form of "yttrium metal", but more often enters the downstream rare earth industry chain in compounds such as yttrium oxide (YO). In the spot market outside of China, Argus statistics show that the price of European yttrium oxide surged by 4,400% to $270/kg in 2025 from the beginning of the year; by February 2026, market statistics compiled by Argus showed that the trading price of this rare earth metal had risen by approximately 60% since their coverage in November 2025, reaching a level about 69 times higher than a year ago.
The importance of rare earth metal yttrium lies not in its quantity, but in its critical role in key positions where without it, system performance can degrade or even fail to work. For aerospace, defense, and gas turbine industries, yttrium plays a crucial role in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings and related high-temperature coating systems, used to protect jet engine, gas turbine blades, and other high-temperature components from rapid destruction due to high heat.
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has emphasized the importance of yttrium for the "world's most advanced jet engines". For the Trump administration's continued push to reshore semiconductor manufacturing to the US, yttrium is typically used for protective coatings and insulation layers, and a shortage can lengthen production cycles, raise costs, and reduce equipment efficiency.
Moreover, official data from USGS, DOE, and RSC has shown that yttrium is deeply embedded in YAG lasers, advanced ceramics, electronic devices, high-temperature superconductors, microwave/radar filters, and parts of energy systems; USGS has repeatedly stressed that in high-end engineering electronics, laser, and fluorescent materials applications, yttrium typically lacks a direct substitute with equivalent performance. From both an engineering and capital market perspective, yttrium is a typical low tonnage, strategically flexible material that can become a bottleneck.
Why is the rare earth industry chain so important for the US government?
Since 2025, the competition between China and the US in chips and rare earths has become increasingly intense. Under the leadership of President Trump, the US government has made unprecedented efforts to support the expansion of US rare earth ore and rare earth magnet production to achieve "complete independence of the US rare earth supply system".
It is understood that since 2025, the Trump administration has joined forces with major US tech giants such as Apple Inc. to support large orders to the US rare earth giant MP Materials (MP.US), which owns the Mountain Pass rare earth mine. Since going public in 2020, MP Materials has experienced an unprecedented bull market, with its stock price soaring by 300% since 2025, reaching new all-time highs. The rise in MP Materials' stock price reflects not just price or order stimulation, but the increased demand from industries such as semiconductors, defense, permanent magnets, and advanced manufacturing for non-China Rare Earth Resources And Technology sources being amplified by policy and capital.
In recent years, the US government has been very direct in its public statements: the US is "overly dependent" on imports for rare earth magnets, and domestic production can only meet a small fraction of defense requirements; even if the US can mine ores domestically, as long as separation, refining, and magnet manufacturing are still subject to foreign control, this dependence poses a security risk. In other words, the US needs to eliminate not just a single "mine dependence", but the vulnerability along the entire rare earth industry chain from mining to separation, metals, magnets, and final applications.
In the context of the US-China competition, holding the entire rare earth industry chain has proven to be a very efficient economic weapon. China holds an overwhelming advantage in rare earth and related processing, with data from the International Energy Agency showing that China dominates as much as 90% of the refining of key minerals, including core rare earth mines; and CFR research indicates that China controls the vast majority of heavy rare earth processing and permanent magnet manufacturing capabilities.
In the past year, China has implemented export bans on dual-use products to Japan and included rare earths in highly sensitive bargaining, with media reports indicating that Japanese companies have clearly felt industrial manufacturing pressure. For the US, this serves as a reminder: as long as it cannot secure dominance in refining and magnet materials, the US semiconductor, defense, automotive, power equipment, and advanced manufacturing systems may be subject to long-term constraints in the GEO Group Inc conflict.
From a financial market perspective, rare earths are no longer just cyclical commodities, but strategic assets priced based on GEO Group Inc premiums, defense premiums, and supply chain security premiums. In the event of a significant escalation of global GEO Group Inc political conflicts, what the US government may lack is not just a batch of rare earth ores, but the independence and certainty of the entire industrial system.
