Sodium benzylpenicillin is a penicillinase-resistant penicillin that exerts bactericidal effects by inhibiting the biosynthesis of bacterial cell walls in actively proliferating penicillin-sensitive microorganisms. Resistance to penicillin may be due to the destruction of the beta-lactam ring by beta-lactamase, changes in the affinity of penicillin to its target, or a decrease in antibiotic concentration reaching the target area. Resistance to benzylpenicillin suggests resistance to other beta-lactam antibiotics, except for newly developed drugs that are still effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
