National Energy Administration: By 2025, China's total primary energy production will reach 5.13 billion tons of standard coal, breaking the 50 billion ton mark for the first time.
The National Energy Administration stated in a document issued on March 3 that by 2025, China's primary energy production will reach a total of 5.13 billion tons of standard coal, surpassing the milestone of 50 billion tons for the first time.
The National Energy Administration announced on March 3rd that by 2025, China's primary energy production will reach 5.13 billion tons of standard coal, surpassing the 50 billion ton mark for the first time. The effectiveness of energy supply guarantee is the best in the "14th Five-Year Plan" period.
The growth of non-fossil energy electricity generation continues to increase rapidly, while thermal power generation has decreased for the first time in ten years. In 2025, the newly added electricity generation capacity of non-fossil energy in the country reached 112.1% of the total new electricity consumption, exceeding 50% for the fourth time since 2020. Non-fossil energy has become the main source of new electricity generation during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. With the rapid growth of wind, solar, and hydroelectric power generation, thermal power plays a more foundational and regulatory role, with the total electricity generation for the year at about 6.3 trillion kWh, a decrease of 0.7% compared to the previous year.
Coal production continues to grow steadily. According to statistics, in 2025, China's raw coal output was 4.85 billion tons, an increase of 1.4% year-on-year, which is lower than the average annual growth rate of 3% during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. China imported 490 million tons of coal in 2025, a decrease of 9.6% from the previous year.
Domestic crude oil production continues to increase, with significant results in diversifying imports. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, annual crude oil production exceeded 200 million tons and remained stable with a slight increase. In 2025, crude oil production reached 216 million tons, a 1.5% increase year-on-year. Crude oil imports totaled 578 million tons, an increase of 4.4% year-on-year, with an optimized import structure from around 40 source countries.
Domestic natural gas production continues to grow, and the external dependency rate hits a new low during the "14th Five-Year Plan." In 2025, China's natural gas production reached 262.06 billion cubic meters, marking nine consecutive years of production growth exceeding 100 billion cubic meters, a 6.3% increase year-on-year. The total annual natural gas import volume was 176.46 billion cubic meters, a 2.8% decrease year-on-year, with a growth of 8.0% in pipeline gas imports driven by the operation of the China-Russia Eastern Line; LNG imports declined by 10.6%. The external dependency rate for natural gas is 40%, the lowest level during the "14th Five-Year Plan."
