Allocate 100 million yuan bonus to incentivize delivery riders to ride safely.
Received a push notification in the morning, opened it to see there was a smart watch and a cash reward, what a surprise for the new year. On the morning of February 10th, Qingdao delivery rider Tan Ruigang was preparing to go online for deliveries when he received the platform's "2026 Thank You Letter" and a Chinese New Year gift package. He told reporters that he used to work in a packaging factory, but started delivering food for Meituan last year. He felt that the income was higher than in the factory, and the time was more flexible, making it easier for him to pick up and drop off his first-grade son and young daughter while his wife worked part-time. He also witnessed multiple traffic accidents during his deliveries, so he paid extra attention to safe riding, as he has a wife and kids he doesn't want to worry about. During his daily deliveries, Tan Ruigang slows down at traffic lights, ensuring safe delivery and adjusting his workload according to the situation. Due to his strong safety awareness and driving habits, Tan Ruigang was also recognized by the platform and participated in the delivery rider's Chinese New Year celebration event held in Qingdao on February 4th. On the morning of February 10th, Meituan started sending out Chinese New Year thank you letters to over a million delivery riders, thanking them for their efforts in 2025, and also rewarding hundreds of riders who follow traffic rules with Huawei smart watches, cash rewards, and family health and medical insurance as part of the Chinese New Year gift package. The responsible person for Meituan delivery rider protection stated that the goal is to promote the platform's values and encourage more riders to follow traffic rules and prioritize safe deliveries. This initiative is a continuation of the "No Red Light Running" safety incentive program launched by Meituan in 2025. Over 400,000 delivery riders have actively participated, with over a hundred riders achieving "10,000 deliveries without running a red light" receiving an 8888 RMB prize. The rate of red light running, speeding, and going against traffic for Meituan delivery riders has significantly decreased since the beginning of the year. Wuhan delivery rider Wu Jiameng came to Wuhan from Xiaogan, Hubei in 2025 and is currently working in delivery in the Caidian district of Wuhan. He delivers for 9-10 hours a day and sets delivery goals for himself every month. Another delivery rider from Wuhan, Xu Anxiong, who has been delivering for 6 years, has also benefitted from consistently following safe delivery practices. They both told reporters that in Wuhan's complex traffic environment (such as cars changing lanes without using turn signals or checking mirrors), delivery riders must have a defensive driving mentality, always paying attention to road conditions and avoiding driving too fast due to time pressures which could lead to dangerous situations. On February 5th, both Wu Jiameng and Xu Anxiong were invited to participate in the delivery rider's Chinese New Year celebration event in Wuhan, where they also received packages including rice, noodles, oil, and a Chinese New Year gift box. The responsible person for Meituan delivery rider protection mentioned that apart from rewarding riders who follow traffic rules, the platform also provides cash bonuses, winter clothing, and family health and medical insurance as Spring Festival benefits to excellent riders who maintain consistent deliveries and have high customer ratings. Starting from February 10th, eligible riders can claim their benefits until March 3rd. The person in charge mentioned that this distribution is for delivery riders throughout the country and includes cash, gifts, and coupons, and although some riders may experience delays in receiving the benefits, app lagging, or issues with coupon redemption, the team is prepared to address these problems and ensure a smooth experience for the riders. At the Ningbo Meituan delivery rider Chinese New Year celebration event, Xie Liming, an instructor from the Ningbo Public Security Traffic Management Branch, awarded the "Safety Pioneer" award to delivery riders. This recognition not only enhances the societal recognition and respect for the profession of delivery riders but also serves as an important guiding example for other riders. In recent years, the platform has worked with traffic police departments across the country to improve delivery rider traffic safety. For prevention measures, Meituan regularly provides online traffic safety courses to delivery riders, with over 300 million person-times of training conducted annually. Nationwide, the platform continuously provides and equips smart helmets with safety features such as Bluetooth earphones and self-indicating tail lights and strictly enforces helmet-wearing checks, maintaining a helmet-wearing rate of over 95%. To enhance safety awareness during delivery, Meituan introduced a "Safety Voice Reminder" feature on the rider app starting in 2023, reminding riders about speeding, night riding, passing through crowded areas, and accident-prone areas to ensure safe riding. To assist riders in emergencies, the system can identify riders in need of help and provide online and offline emergency assistance. By evaluating delivery rider's compliance with traffic safety regulations, Meituan combines positive incentives and negative controls to guide delivery riders in following traffic rules conscientiously. This year, the "safety score" pilot program has expanded to nearly 200 cities nationwide, where riders will receive demerits for speeding, distracted driving, running red lights, and not wearing helmets while accumulating points for safe driving. The safety score can be used to exchange for benefits like liability-free cards and can also increase income. Meituan has also implemented data sharing with police departments in cities such as Dongguan, Fuzhou, and Suzhou, identifying delivery riders' traffic violations accurately and enforcing controls based on the severity of the violations. In Ningbo, for example, as early as 2021, the traffic management department in Ningbo and delivery platforms collectively established the Ningbo Delivery Enterprise Traffic Safety Joint Governance Platform, sharing information on traffic violations and delivery orders to strengthen internal supervision, education, and restriction measures. In 2025, the Ningbo Public Security Traffic Management Branch signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Meituan, establishing a liaison mechanism between grassroots teams and delivery sites, integrating digital governance into frontline operations. Moreover, to guide delivery riders in a better time allocation and reduce delivery pressure, Meituan has implemented mechanisms such as fatigue prevention, canceled overtime penalties, and allowing riders to block malicious users. The responsible person mentioned that in the future, the platform will further optimize the handling and appeal processes for delivery anomalies, provide more benefits to outstanding riders with good delivery history, empower riders with more autonomy and choices, and positively guide them to improve delivery service quality and ensure customer satisfaction.
