Didi restarts business in Macau, marking its first entry into a new Asian market in years.
Uber Technologies, Inc. (UBER.US) is launching its ride-hailing service in Macau, China, marking the company's first expansion into a new Asian market in years. In a statement, the company said that as of Tuesday, passengers can book and pay for taxi services in Macau using various languages. Uber Technologies, Inc. also offers Deluxe Corporation car services for trips between Macau and Hong Kong, but trips must be booked 24 hours in advance. This move marks Uber Technologies, Inc.'s first entry into a new Asian market in years. In 2016, Uber Technologies, Inc. sold its China business to Didi Chuxing, and two years later handed over the densely populated Southeast Asian market to Grab Holdings (GRAB.US), but continues to operate in major Asian markets such as India, Japan, and Korea. Uber Technologies, Inc. previously operated in Macau, but suspended its operations in 2017. Uber Technologies, Inc. said it is actively recruiting drivers to ensure smooth operations in Macau, including providing bonuses for drivers who complete trips this month. The company did not disclose how many taxis (mostly controlled by local companies) have signed up to join, which means the initial service range may be limited. In an interview last December, Uber Technologies, Inc. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company expects to offer self-driving taxi services in over 10 markets by the end of 2026, with potential new markets including Hong Kong and Japan.
