On Wednesday, President Trump stated that he has "developed a framework for a future agreement" with NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg on the Greenland issue.
President Trump of the United States said on Wednesday that he had reached a framework agreement with NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg on the Greenland issue. Trump stated that based on this progress in negotiations, he will no longer implement a series of punitive tariffs on European countries that were scheduled to take effect on February 1. Shortly after releasing the statement, Trump stated in an interview that this arrangement is a "conceptual framework for a deal", with specific details being complex and will be gradually disclosed in the future. He hinted that the framework may involve the United States' mineral rights in Greenland, as well as the "Golden Dome" missile defense system proposed by the Trump administration. "They will be involved in the 'Golden Dome', they will be involved in the mineral rights, and we will be involved," Trump said. When asked if the tariffs have been confirmed to be canceled, he responded, "Yes, we have taken down the tariffs because it looks like we have basically a deal worked out." After Trump announced this news on social media, the US stock market quickly rose. A White House spokesperson later stated that more details will be gradually revealed as the negotiations progress. Although details are limited, this statement is seen as a significant turning point in the Greenland issue. Recently, the Trump administration has sent multiple signals discussing acquiring the island through purchase, and has not ruled out using military means to gain control. Greenland is currently under Danish sovereignty, with Denmark being a NATO ally. Both Denmark and Greenland have previously stated that the region is "not for sale." As tensions escalate, multiple European NATO member countries have strengthened their military presence in the area. In response, Trump threatened last weekend to impose new tariffs of at least 10% on related countries starting next month, and increase it to 25% in June. Earlier on Wednesday, Trump spoke at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, emphasizing the necessity for the United States to acquire Greenland for national security reasons, and called for "immediate negotiations" with Denmark. This statement initially caused unease among some attendees. However, Trump also stated that military force would not be used for this purpose, showing some moderation compared to his previous stance. After experiencing a significant decline in the previous trading day due to the Greenland dispute, US stocks rebounded noticeably on that day. By the close, all three major indices rose by over 1%, with spot gold dropping by up to $80 at one point and spot silver dropping by over $3 at one point. Later on, Trump refused to confirm if the new framework involves the United States gaining sovereignty over Greenland in an interview, only stating, "This is a long-term agreement, a long-term ultimate agreement, I think it puts everybody in a very good position."
