On November 28th, the Hong Kong government Census and Statistics Department released the results of the 2024 Annual Survey of Economic Activities by industry - Information and Communication, Finance and Insurance, Professional and Business Services. In 2024, the financial industry (excluding banking) recorded the highest total revenue, followed by the insurance industry, banking industry, information and communication industry, professional, scientific, and technical activities industry, and administrative and support service activities industry.
In the financial industry (excluding banking), the total revenue in 2024 reached HK$732.9 billion, an increase of 4.8% compared to 2023, while the average total revenue per company rose by 1.4% to HK$73.1 million. Operating expenses and employee compensation together increased by 7.5% to HK$357.3 billion in 2024. The industry's surplus (total revenue minus operating expenses, employee compensation, and (if applicable) cost of goods sold) increased by 2.4% to HK$375.6 billion in 2024, accounting for 51.3% of total revenue in 2024. Value added in the industry (excluding investment and holding companies) increased by 13.3% to HK$122.8 billion in 2024. This value added can roughly measure the industry's contribution to Hong Kong's GDP. In 2024, there were approximately 10,000 companies engaged in the financial industry (excluding banking), with around 96,400 employees, and an average of 9.6 employees per company.
In the insurance industry, the total revenue in 2024 reached HK$728.6 billion, an increase of 7.4% compared to 2023, while the average total revenue per company increased by 11.3% to HK$269.1 million. Operating expenses and employee compensation together increased by 12.9% to HK$73.6 billion in 2024. In 2024, there were around 2,700 companies engaged in the insurance industry, with approximately 83,000 employees, and an average of 30.6 employees per company.
In the banking industry, the total revenue in 2024 reached HK$611.7 billion, an increase of 5.1% compared to 2023, while the average total revenue per company increased by 8.7% to HK$3.0 billion. Operating expenses and employee compensation together increased by 6.6% to HK$271.5 billion in 2024. In 2024, there were 203 companies engaged in the banking industry, with approximately 98,500 employees, and an average of 485.0 employees per company.
Due to the nature of business operations in the banking and insurance industries, the surplus and value added of these industries were not compiled. The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong government separately released value-added statistics for these two industries compiled within the framework of GDP. Similarly, within the classification of the financial industry (excluding banking), the value added of investment and holding companies was not compiled. Therefore, the value added of this industry does not include the value added of investment and holding companies.
In the information and communication industry, the total revenue in 2024 reached HK$259.1 billion, an increase of 2.8% compared to 2023, while the average total revenue per company slightly increased by 0.7% to HK$22.5 million. Operating expenses and employee compensation together increased by 3.5% to HK$179.7 billion in 2024. The industry's surplus decreased by 3.7% to HK$58.8 billion in 2024, accounting for 22.7% of total revenue in 2024. Value added in the industry increased by 1.8% to HK$104.0 billion in 2024. In 2024, there were approximately 11,500 companies engaged in the information and communication industry, with around 102,000 employees, and an average of 8.9 employees per company.
In the professional, scientific, and technical activities industry, the total revenue in 2024 reached HK$163.5 billion, an increase of 2.1% compared to 2023, while the average total revenue per company slightly increased by 0.8% to HK$5.8 million. Operating expenses and employee compensation together increased by 3.0% to HK$133.7 billion in 2024. The industry's surplus decreased by 1.3% to HK$28.4 billion in 2024, accounting for 17.4% of total revenue in 2024. Value added in the industry decreased by 1.9% to HK$87.9 billion in 2024. In 2024, there were approximately 28,400 companies engaged in the professional, scientific, and technical activities industry, with around 153,600 employees, and an average of 5.4 employees per company.
In the administrative and support service activities industry, the total revenue in 2024 reached HK$136.9 billion, an increase of 13.9% compared to 2023, while the average total revenue per company increased by 12.5% to HK$11.9 million. Operating expenses and employee compensation together increased by 13.3% to HK$123.7 billion in 2024. The industry's surplus increased by 20.4% to HK$12.2 billion in 2024, accounting for 8.9% of total revenue in 2024. Value added in the industry increased by 6.9% to HK$64.5 billion in 2024. In 2024, there were approximately 11,500 companies engaged in the administrative and support service activities industry, with around 236,200 employees, and an average of 20.5 employees per company.
