On November 28th, the Hong Kong government census department released the results of the 2024 Annual Survey of Economic Activities for Import and Export Trade, Wholesale and Retail Industry, and Accommodation and Food Services Industry.
On November 28, the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong government published the results of the annual economic activity survey for 2024, which covered import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, as well as accommodation and food services. The results showed that the total revenue for these industries in Hong Kong in 2024 was HK$5,473.5 billion, an increase of 4.5% from 2023. The average total revenue per company also increased by 10.6% to HK$38.7 million. The total operating expenses (including operating expenses, cost of goods sold, and employee compensation) for import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food services in 2024 amounted to HK$4,997.7 billion, a 4.5% increase from 2023. The average total operating expenses per company also increased by 10.6% to HK$35.3 million. The total surplus (total revenue minus total operating expenses) for these industries in 2024 was HK$475.7 billion, a 3.9% increase from 2023. The average total surplus per company also increased by 10.0% to HK$3.4 million. The total surplus for these industries accounted for 8.7% of the total revenue in 2024, similar to the proportion in 2023. The industry value added for import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, as well as accommodation and food services in 2024 was HK$649.1 billion, a 3.4% increase from 2023. This industry value added can roughly measure the contribution of these industries to the gross domestic product of Hong Kong. The average industry value added per company increased by 9.5% to HK$4.6 million in 2024. According to the survey results, there were approximately 141,400 companies engaged in import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food services in 2024, with a total employment of around 896,900 people. The average number of employees per company was 6.3. In terms of import and export trade, the total revenue in 2024 was HK$4,523.3 billion, while the total operating expenses were HK$4,092.5 billion. The total surplus increased from HK$4,132 billion in 2023 to HK$4,308 billion in 2024, accounting for 9.5% of the total revenue in 2024. The industry value added increased by 5.6% to HK$4,933 billion from 2023. In the wholesale trade, the total revenue in 2024 was HK$275.2 billion, while the total operating expenses were HK$269.9 billion. The total surplus decreased from HK$5.6 billion in 2023 to HK$5.3 billion in 2024, accounting for 1.9% of the total revenue in 2024. The industry value added decreased by 2.6% to HK$19.1 billion from 2023. In the retail trade, the total revenue in 2024 was HK$489.2 billion, while the total operating expenses were HK$458.9 billion. The total surplus increased from HK$29.9 billion in 2023 to HK$30.3 billion in 2024, accounting for 6.2% of the total revenue in 2024. The industry value added decreased by 7.7% to HK$68.9 billion from 2023. In the accommodation services industry (including hotels, guesthouses, hostels, and other companies providing short-term accommodation services), the total revenue in 2024 was HK$46.1 billion, while the total operating expenses were HK$39.2 billion. The total surplus increased from HK$6.1 billion in 2023 to HK$6.9 billion in 2024, accounting for 15.0% of the total revenue in 2024. The industry value added increased by 6.5% to HK$21.8 billion from 2023. In the food services industry (mainly including restaurants), the total revenue in 2024 was HK$139.8 billion, while the total operating expenses were HK$137.4 billion. The total surplus decreased from HK$2.9 billion in 2023 to HK$2.4 billion in 2024, accounting for 1.7% of the total revenue in 2024. The industry value added slightly increased by 0.7% to HK$46.0 billion from 2023.
